This Day in Buildings History 🏙️

On Feb 21, 1980, Local Law 10 was approved by Mayor Ed Koch, launching NYC’s original façade inspection program – which was created following the tragic death of Grace Gold, a 17-year-old freshman student at Barnard College, who was killed after being struck by a loose piece of masonry that fell from a building in Morningside Heights.

The law required buildings over six stories to undergo professional façade inspections and made owners responsible for fixing serious hazards.

That early safety measure paved the way for Local Law 11, now known as today’s Façades Inspection & Safety Program (FISP), helping keep our streets safer ever since.
