This Women's History Month and World Engineering Day, we celebrate Edith Clarke—a pioneer who broke new ground in electrical engineering. As the first professionally employed female electrical engineer in the U.S., the first female Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and the first woman to teach electrical engineering at a university, Clarke’s contributions shaped the industry.​

As Black History Month comes to a close, Loring recognizes our final spotlight, Albert Cassell. A visionary architect, engineer, and educator, Cassell played a pivotal role in shaping the landscapes of Howard University, Morgan State University, and Virginia Union University. Joining Howard’s architectural faculty in 1920, he became department head and university architect by 1922, laying the foundation for the Department of Architecture. By 1934, he transformed the School of Applied Science into the College of Engineering and Architecture. His design of Howard’s iconic Founders Library remains a lasting symbol of education and excellence. Beyond academia, his legacy includes civic structures, public housing, and a bold effort to establish Chesapeake Heights on the Bay, a resort community for African Americans. Cassell’s work continues to inspire, leaving a lasting impact on the communities and institutions he helped shape.
