Your patio is a roof.

Pavers, slabs, and sealed paths do not drink.

Rain hits them and runs to the lowest edge.

Often, that edge is your wall.

Three questions before you sign anything.

1. What did you TEST — not what did you look at.
2. Where’s the water going — absorbed, or just moved?
3. What happens in 18 months, when it clogs?

No answer to all three means you got a guess with a price on it, not a diagnosis.

New Orleans flooding isn’t a pump problem. It’s an absorption problem — and we’re heading into the weeks that prove it every year.

Every drainage system in this city assumes water is something you move somewhere else. Street, canal, pump. And when the pump can’t keep up, all of it comes back to the lowest thing it can find.

There’s another approach that needs no new infrastructure: don’t move the water. Absorb it where it lands.

Here’s why the word matters: a landscaper is hired to make a surface look finished. A forensic landscaping company is hired to find out why the surface is failing and quantify it. Differen code, different job, different training.

Call the wrong category of professional for a water problem and you get mulch where you needed a soil column analysis — then you pay again in two years.

The word you use decides the answer you get.

The soil under that slab didn’t wash out. It shrank.

Clay changes volume with moisture. Drought dries it, it contracts and pulls away from whatever is sitting on it. Rain swells it back — but never all the way, and never evenly.

Repeat that for fifteen summers and you get a void nobody dug.

Foam fills the void. It doesn’t stop the cycle — because the cycle runs on how much water that soil column takes in and holds, and almost nobody measures that.

The void is the symptom. The moisture swing is the disease.

You paid good money for that French drain. It worked one season. Now the water’s back and you feel like you got robbed.

Here’s how to know it actually failed — three signs, all free to check.

1. Water pooling right over the drain line. In clay, the trench holds water instead of draining it. That’s the Bathtub Effect.

2. It worked one season, then quit. That’s silt clogging the gravel. No proper fabric barrier and it chokes itself in about 18 months.

3. The water just moved — to the neighbor’s side, the back corner, the foundation. That’s not a fix. That’s relocation.

A drain moves water. It never measures whether your soil can absorb it. That’s the part nobody checked.
