Excellence in Construction Awards | Optus O Pavilion

The Optus O Pavilion is the winner of the Commercial Buildings up to $30 million category at the Excellence in Construction Awards by the Master Builders Association of New South Wales (MBA). Built by Grindley, the project is defined by precision, sustainability and innovation, from its complex curved roof and glulam timber structure to the seamless integration of technology and design. MBA highlights the build’s excellent external finishes, well-resolved detailing, and the consideration given to future maintenance. The O Pavilion serves as an arrival zone for the Optus Campus in Macquarie Park.

BSE's NSW team was engaged by Grindley through project managers Signature Project Management to provide electrical, mechanical, fire protection, hydraulic and acoustics engineering services design.

David Luck, BSE’s National Team Leader - Acoustic Services and Acoustics lead for the project, said: “Our role on the Optus O Pavilion project was to provide a comprehensive acoustic assessment to support the design intent and ensure the building performs as expected. This included evaluating internal acoustic conditions, assessing the façade performance, and reviewing noise levels from mechanical and other building services. We also examined reverberation times within the new spaces to ensure clarity, comfort and appropriate acoustic performance for the Pavilion’s intended use. While the initial reverberation time investigation provided useful recommendations, our review identified areas that could be refined and updated to better align with stringent audio visual performance requirements.”

Project | David Jones Bourke Street Beauty Floor

BSE was engaged by i2C Architects to provide mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire protection, and lighting design services for the $15 million transformation of the Ground Floor Beauty Area within David Jones' iconic Bourke Street Flagship store. In addition to these services, our team also provided ESD services to facilitate David Jones' sustainability targets.

The Beauty Floor features prestigious brands including Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and L’Occitane. The space has been designed with dedicated zones showcasing luxury skincare, makeup, fragrance, and emerging categories such as hair and wellness.

Great care was taken to preserve the building’s exquisite heritage-listed elements, including the decorative plaster ceiling mouldings and ram’s head cornice mouldings above columns while introducing new fittings and finishes to elevate the space.

The shopfront was also refurbished to create a more contemporary presence, incorporating aged bronze-toned materials and black terrazzo. The entrance columns were squared off and clad in the same bronze-toned finish, while a new illuminated sign and display windows complete the updated façade.

BSE was engaged to manage the construction through to practical completion. This included tender evaluations and recommendations, contract reviews, contractor appointments, development and ongoing review of the construction program, progress claim assessments, and coordination between the various trades.

Andrew Sayer, Director - VIC and BSE’s project lead, said: “The refurbishment of the Beauty Floor and shopfront of this heritage-listed building, first opened as the Buckley & Nunn department store in 1911, is part of its ongoing evolution to meet the needs of David Jones’ discerning customers. BSE is proud to have played a pivotal role in this project and to be part of the building’s rich history.”

BSE’s contribution to this refurbishment supports a seamless customer journey, inspiring discovery for the more than nine million visitors to the David Jones Bourke Street Flagship each year.

Project | Sustainable Hospitality at the Quincy Hotel Melbourne

BSE was engaged by TFE Hotels as part of their board-led companywide goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. A pilot programme to elevate their sustainability efforts was implemented at the Quincy Hotel Melbourne in Melbourne’s CBD, resulting in the hotel achieving both NABERS and Climate Active – Carbon Neutral Certification. This makes the Quincy Hotel the first international hotel brand in Melbourne to offer sustainable hospitality.

Leveraging BSE’s extensive experience in building performance assessments, our team conducted thorough reviews of the hotel’s operational efficiencies, including NABERS Energy and Water certifications. By analysing the hotel’s building engineering systems and carbon footprint, key areas for improvement were identified, along with solutions to align these with both Climate Active and NABERS requirements. This strategic approach streamlined the certification process, ensuring that the hotel achieved its carbon-neutral status swiftly and cost-effectively.

We’re very proud of our ongoing partnership with TFE Hotels, working closely with their national portfolio to continuously identify opportunities for improved building performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability. BSE provides ongoing support in reviewing and refining their environmental strategies for operational efficiency, while helping them meet stakeholders' ESG requirements and align with the environmental expectations of their guests through these ratings and certifications. Project | Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Centre at Eagle Farm TAFE

BSE was engaged by the Queensland Government, through principal consultant Gray Puksand, to provide electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and fire protection engineering design services for the $47.7 million state-of-the-art Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Centre (RAMC) at the TAFE Queensland Eagle Farm campus.

This groundbreaking facility, which officially opened on 17 June 2025, features specialised robotics, hydrogen, renewable energy and electrotechnology workshops, digital labs, learning areas, and staff and student amenities.

With manufacturing contributing $20 billion annually to the Queensland economy, the RAMC will provide students with class-leading training which in turn will contribute to the expected 182,000 workers in the industry by 2025-26.

The project presented unique challenges, and BSE went beyond the usual scope. For example, in addition to the standard chilled water air conditioning and ventilation, mechanical services included a dedicated extraction system for the solder workshop, and compressed air reticulation. Hydraulic services extended beyond water and drainage, requiring a bespoke external sewage pump station to overcome unforeseen site constraints.

Stephen Gates, TAFE Queensland’s SkillsTech General Manager, spoke at the opening:

"With this new facility and the new courses, it brings on offer at this campus, we are projecting for enrolment numbers to grow and for the most popular courses to shift focus towards emerging industries.

This new facility will enhance the training availability in North Brisbane for crucial trade areas, while also supporting training into emerging industries including robotics and advanced manufacturing."

BSE is proud to have contributed to this facility, which supports Queensland’s plan to embrace automation and Industry 4.0, helping shape the future of manufacturing in the state.

Elevation | Jamie Waygood Elevated to Associate, Team Leader – Newcastle

We are pleased to announce that Jamie Waygood has been elevated to Associate, Team Leader – Newcastle. To mark the appointment, we sat down with Jamie for a Q&A covering his journey at BSE, his work in the Hunter Region, and life outside of work. Check out the full Q&A on the BSE website.

In this new role, Jamie will lead BSE’s continued growth in Newcastle and the greater Hunter Region. While BSE has previously delivered work in the area through its Sydney office, including condition audits for McDonald Jones Stadium and the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and Showground, this appointment represents a key step in strengthening its local presence.

As a mechanical engineer with over 10 years of experience across mining, building services, energy efficiency, and HVAC design, Jamie brings a broad and practical engineering background to the role. His project experience includes major infrastructure and specialist facilities such as NorthConnex, Macquarie Island Research Station, Scone Equine Hospital, and the ANSTO Nuclear Medicine Research Laboratory.

Based in Newcastle, Jamie will oversee operations across the region. His focus will be on strengthening local capability, supporting project delivery, and building long-term client relationships through accessible, on-the-ground engineering leadership.
