To celebrate Earth Day, we look to the New Native Garden at NYBG (New York Botanical Garden) as an example of beauty, function and sustainability acting hand in hand. Designed by OvS, it opened to the public in 2013.

This project received an Honor Award in the General Design category in the 2020 awards. The awards jury noted the garden “boasts nearly 100,000 plants across four ecosystems (glade, meadow, wetland, and woodland).” The Bronx River flows through the site, highlighting the essential need to marry the city landscape to the wetland downstream.

To fulfill ecosystem roles, plants were selected based on their biodiversity, sustainability, and adaptability. They simultaneously offer beauty and ecological benefits throughout the four seasons.
