Congratulations to Anna H., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse and Sparta, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award. Read an excerpt from the nomination.

“I am nominating Anna for the care she provided during our most critical patient of the shift — a stroke patient who arrived critically ill, required intubation, multiple IV medications and an emergent transfer for a thrombectomy. Cases like this are challenging anywhere but at a critical access hospital, they demand more from everyone involved.

Anna was exceptional. She assisted during the resuscitation with precision and composure. She was always a step ahead. She cared for his wife, who was at the bedside for all of it. Anna took the time to establish a genuine connection with her from the start — warm, unhurried and honest. Every question was answered. Every concern was addressed directly.

By the time that ambulance left, his wife was not just informed about what was happening, she trusted the people caring for her husband, and she felt cared for herself. Anna understands that the patient in front of her is never just the one in the bed."

Vaccination is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older. If you only need an influenza or COVID-19 vaccine, schedule an appointment at a Primary Care vaccine clinic through the Mayo Clinic Patient Portal or by calling your Primary Care clinic.

Halloween is rapidly approaching, and everyone is preparing for the big night of costumes, pumpkins, treats and fun. Here are a few tips to make your Halloween sweet, successful and safe.

Before heading out:
🔸Make sure costumes fit well and don’t trip you up.
🔸Skip the mask or check that you can see clearly through it.
🔸Wear comfortable shoes, not just costume ones.
While trick-or-treating:
🔸Stick with family or friends and carry a phone.
🔸Bring a flashlight or glow sticks to see and be seen.
🔸Only visit houses with lights on and use crosswalks carefully.
When you’re home:
🔸Keep candy out of reach of pets and small children.
🔸Watch for allergens.
🔸Enjoy some treats but be sure to save some for later.

Stay visible, stay together, and make the night a treat, not a trick.

Congratulations to Brook E., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award. Read an excerpt from the nomination.

“Brook is beyond deserving of this award. She is the go-to person in our department. Always willing to help out and a very competent and knowledgeable nurse. Not to mention her plethora of compassion and patience that she constantly displays.

Brook is constantly going above and beyond for our patients and will follow through until she is able to help the patient with whatever is needed.

Brook was beyond patient and kind with a patient who needed assistance arranging her appointments so that the patient could move forward with a very important procedure. This is just one example of spectacular care coordination and patient care that Brook has provided to our patients.

She has spent hours many times over the past year trying to coordinate important follow-up care for various patients and assisting them in understanding the plan of care and being comfortable with how to proceed.

Brook exemplifies the kind of nurse that patients, loved ones and staff recognize as an outstanding role model and co-worker. She is a great example of many of Mayo Clinic's RICH TIES values — Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Healing, Teamwork and Excellence — and is a valued member of our Cannon Falls Family Practice team"
