🎃 VOTE for your favorite pumpkin in the comments! Swipe through all 10, then comment the number of the one you love most.

We challenged our team to a pumpkin-decorating competition, and now it’s your turn to weigh in. The main rule was no carving, but everything else was fair game.

Every custom prosthetic socket we design starts as a blank slate, built around one person’s goals and lifestyle, so it’s no surprise that our team’s eye for detail and creative problem-solving works on pumpkins too.

Patients in our Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus offices have been casting their votes all week. Comment votes and in-office votes will be added together to crown our champion.

Voting closes at the end of the day Friday, October 30, and we’ll announce the winner in our stories on Halloween.

If you have a fun pumpkin to share or a creative amputee Halloween costume, we’d love to see it! Send us a message or tag us in your post for a feature.

May the best pumpkin win!

We’re often asked: “How is a custom prosthetic socket made?”

You may have recently seen our patient, Kendra Herber (Kendra Herber) share about her new socket.

Kendra is a below-knee amputee and Para Standing Tennis athlete. Before the World Championships in Italy, her socket started causing blisters and pain because her limb had lost volume. She uses suction suspension and can’t add socks, so even a few centimeters can make a difference.

Here’s a snippet of how the process for a new custom prosthetic leg can begin.

For a traditional casting method, we wrap the liner, so the plaster won’t stick. This step helps ensure that the cast comes right off. Since her limb is slightly wider at the bottom, a cut strip is placed in case the cast needs to be cut off. Next, Sara (Sara Lamont), one of our prosthetists, marks bony landmarks and any pressure or problem spots that might need attention. Then it’s time for the plaster. Once the cast is formed by hand and hardened, it is removed and sent to our in-house fabrication lab for the next step in the process.

If you’d like to see more of what’s next, check out the “how it’s made” series under our reels tab.

Thank you, Sara, for the patience and clinic hours it took to get this leg right!

If your socket is rubbing, loose, or painful, your limb may have changed shape, and we’re happy to take a look.

What a day! Our 5th Annual Limbitless Drive is in the books. The rain held off for a morning clinic with every skill level, and we followed it up with our friendly 9-hole scramble full of first-time swings and big wins.

This year meant even more because for the first time, we opened the day to amputees across the community, not just our patients.

Huge thanks to our sponsors and to the Dayton Community Golf Course volunteers and instructors who made it happen.

We’re already looking forward to year 6!!

Earlier this week, Kendra Herber closed out the International Para Standing Tennis Association 500 in Mason, Ohio (just up the road from our Cincinnati office) with a doubles run all the way to the championship match. It came down to a 10-8 tiebreak.

In her own words:
“I am really proud of my doubles performance in the championship match. I held my own against three of the best players in the world. As the only female, I feel like it helped make a statement about what us women are capable of.

I also think if you watched a video of my doubles match even six months ago, I would’ve looked like an entirely different player today. That just goes to show what focused hard work can do for your improvement.

Lastly, I am really excited to have two young new players compete at this tournament. One of them is a female who has a ton of potential in the sport. As we try to grow Para Standing Tennis, new juniors, especially females, are pivotal.”

Two things stand out to us. Six months of focused work that was easily visible on the court and the fact that after a championship match that went to a tiebreak, the thing she wanted to talk about was the next generation of players coming up behind her.

That’s who we get to work with. Kendra is the No. 1 ranked women’s Para Standing Tennis player in the world and an Optimus Prosthetics patient - how lucky are we.

Proud of you, Kendra. On to the next! 🎾

“I don’t want to be ‘good for being disabled.’ I want to be a good tennis player…period.”
That’s Kendra Herber and she is.

She’s ranked No. 1 in the World in Women’s Para Standing Tennis, in a sport she only started competing in after retiring from paratriathlon in 2024.

She trains hard and plays hard and we can’t wait to see her take the court again tomorrow during the IPSTA 500 tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center alongside the Cincinnati Open!

As she put it before Worlds this summer: let’s see what happens when someone has a big dream and a ton of people in her corner.

That’s the part we care about most. Kendra’s rise is what’s possible when you decide what you want and build the right team around it: coaches, family, teammates, and of course, the people who make sure the leg she’s competing on can handle everything she throws at it.

Go get ‘em, Kendra. We can’t wait to watch. 🎾

Big news from the Optimus family…we’re officially an approved O&P residency site!

Being selected as an approved site is a recognition of our clinical expertise, and for us, it’s also a way to give back to a field that exists to serve the amputee community.

We’re excited to help shape the next generation of exceptional clinicians who will go on to change lives across the country.

If you’re an O&P grad student ready to train with a team that sets the bar high, we’d love to hear from you.

🔗 Apply through OPRESCAS: https://oprescas.cas.myliaison.com/applicant-ux/ #/login

Not familiar with O&P residencies? Think of it like a medical residency. It’s how the most skilled clinicians in our field complete their training before going on to serve patients of their own. We couldn’t be more proud to be part of that journey.

Insurance is probably the least fun thing to talk about when it comes to prosthetics, but it’s one of the most important parts.

After our team worked diligently to overturn a denied claim for a patient we’ve served since 2018, he sent us flowers this week along with this note:

“Thank you all for your professionalism, customer focus, drive, and dedication… I can find no other group of people who deserve great recognition than all of you!”

We’re fortunate to have a team dedicated to working with insurance, handling documentation, coordinating with physicians, and advocating through appeals so our patients don’t have to navigate it alone.

Our job is making sure our patients are taken care of, which means we’re there every step of the way, from the hospital onward.

We’re grateful for the trust our patients place in us. ❤️

Over the last few days, we’ve watched some incredible record-breaking performances from athletes pushing the limits of what’s possible.

We had to show up in red, white, and blue to support Team USA!!

As impressive as these Olympic events have been, we’re already looking ahead to the Paralympic Games just a few weeks away. The feats we’re about to see bring this kind of excellence to an even higher level. Same speeds and stakes, but an entirely different perspective.

Today, USA Men’s Hockey takes the ice. Fun fact: this marks the first games since 2014 that NHL players are back competing on the Olympic stage, which should make for some incredible action.

Let’s go USA! 🇺🇸🏒🔥
