Notice of Canal Speed Limits

New York State Canal System

Mariners are reminded to obey all posted speed limits on the Canal system. Mariners failing to obey posted speed limits are subject to enforcement action.

Please note: Guidance shared in the notice dated June 2, 2017, does not rescind the officially posted speed limits. Those guidelines were intended to supplement the posted speed limits and remind boaters of the effects of their wake, even when obeying posted speed limits.

Erie and Oswego Canals

Brewerton Baldwinsville and Oswego

Update



Mariners are advised of underwater inspections occurring on the Erie and Oswego Canals on the following schedule:

Wednesday, August 12th - Erie Canal Lock E-23 in Brewerton Guard Gate and Southwest Approach Wall, Lock E-24 in Baldwinsville Taintor Gate, and Southwest Approach Wall. Oswego Canal Lock O-8 Southwest Approach Wall.
Thursday, August 13th – Erie Canal Lock E-23 in Brewerton Guard Gate, Erie Canal Lock E-24 in Baldwinsville Southwest Approach Wall and Taintor Gate, Oswego Canal Lock O-7 in Oswego Northwest Approach Wall, Oswego Canal Lock O-7 in Oswego Southeast Guide Piers.
The inspection areas will be marked by commercial diver’s flags while divers are in the water. Boaters must come to a full stop, use caution, and proceed at a "No Wake" speed, and under no circumstances exceed 5 mph. Boaters must avoid inspection areas.

Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Sylvan Beach

August 7, 2025



Mariners are advised that waterski shows that will be occurring during Canal Fest Weekend at Sylvan Beach on Sunday, August 9th from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The events will be occurring in the navigation channel, starting just east of the Main St. Bridge, SR 13 (E-63) over the Erie Canal and continuing west to the entrance of the Canal at Oneida Lake. Regatta buoys will be positioned at both ends of the event area. There will be breaks in between heats lasting no more than 60 minutes during which traffic may pass through as directed.

Law enforcement boats will be positioned to monitor boat traffic and safety boats will be present to direct boaters. Boaters must follow all instructions from the law enforcement and safety boats at the event. Boaters should expect minor delays and plan itineraries accordingly.

Erie Canal – Oneida Lake

August 6, 2026



Mariners are advised of a report that Oneida Lake (ATON) lighted buoy G "104" Fl, on the eastern end of Oneida Lake, at Sylvan Beach breakwater has been reported as extinguished. Boaters should proceed with caution in this area of the lake. Crews have been notified for repairs. An update will follow.

Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Brewerton

July 20, 2026



Mariners are advised that bridge removal work will continue through this week and will still experience delays at US Route 11 Bridge (E-64) over the Erie Canal in Brewerton. A lit barge will be moved to the north side of the navigation channel today, July 20th. Workboats will also be working beneath the bridge. Spotters will be stationed on both sides of the bridge. Canal traffic will be held on Tuesday, July 21st, as the bridge is raised and pulled to the south side of the navigation channel. Boaters must come to a full stop, sound horns, and proceed at a "No Wake" speed, and under no circumstances exceed 5 mph. Bridge removal work is expected to be complete by the end of the day on Friday, July 24th. This schedule is weather dependent.

Boaters should plan their itineraries accordingly.

Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Brewerton

July 6, 2026



Mariners are advised that they will experience delays at US Route 11 Bridge (E-64) over the Erie Canal in Brewerton starting on Tuesday, July 7th due to the bridge removal. A lit barge with white obstruction markers will be stationed on the south side of the navigation channel with workboats working beneath the bridge. Spotters will be stationed on both sides of the bridge. The barge will be moved to the north side of the navigation channel during the week. This bridge is located between Buoy R "460" and R "462". Boaters must come to a full stop, sound horns, and proceed at a "No Wake" speed, and under no circumstances exceed 5 mph. Bridge removal is expected to be complete by the end of the day on Friday, July 10th. This schedule is weather dependent.

Boaters should plan their itineraries accordingly.
