NOTICE TO MARINERS

CANAL SYSTEM UPDATE

HOURS OF OPERATION & LAST DAY OF NAVIGATION

October 2, 2026

The New York State Canal Corporation announced today the following update:

Last Day of Navigation

The Canal system is scheduled to close to navigation at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. All vessel operators must plan their trips accordingly to ensure they exit the system by that time. Commercial shipping and tour boat operators that have obtained a Post Navigation Season Permit are permitted to be on the Canal system according to the terms of their permit.

2027 Navigation Season

The Canal Corporation anticipates opening the Canal system in May 2027 for the 203rd season of navigation. The opening date and hours of operation will be announced in a subsequent Notice to Mariners.

🎣 NYS Free Fishing Day! This Saturday the 26th. No license required! 🐟

To celebrate National hunting and fishing day New York State DEC is waving freshwater fishing license requirements for the day.

This is a great time to take someone who hasn't been fishing in a while and explore many of New York's beautiful lakes and streams while taking in the beautiful Fall foliage at the same time.

All other fishing rules and regulations still apply.

Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Sylvan Beach

September 17, 2026

Mariners are advised that vessel mooring will not be available to boaters at the Sylvan Beach Pier due to the annual Oneida Lake Chicken Wing Run from noon on Friday, September 18th, until noon on Sunday, September 20th. Approximately 100 powerboats will be tied to the wall during the event. The boater group has blocked the entire north side of the Canal for fee required boat parking on the wall. Due to existing submerged hazards, vessel operators are advised to always remain within the navigation channel. Law enforcement boats will be present. Boaters should plan their itineraries accordingly.

Mariners are advised that Oswego Canal Lock O-5 in Minetto will close for repairs until further notice on Wednesday, September 16 at 8:00 am. Boaters should plan their itineraries accordingly. Updates will follow.
