What goes into restoring a historic structure? It takes a careful balance of preserving a building’s historic character while adapting it to meet today’s needs.

Completed in 1915, Pittsburgh’s Oliver Bath House is an example of how thoughtful rehabilitation can protect a building’s historic character while improving its safety, accessibility, and functionality. Buchart Horn Architects provided architectural and engineering services for the comprehensive rehabilitation, including structural repairs, historic window and masonry restoration, building system upgrades, pool improvements, and accessibility enhancements. Throughout the project, Buchart Horn Architects coordinated with historic preservation agencies to maintain the building’s integrity while supporting its long-term use.

As Architect Christopher Urban, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, explains:

“When working with historic buildings, such as Pittsburgh’s Oliver Bath House, it is important to first understand the existing structure, its components, and their condition, and to identify the features and materials that give the building its character. That understanding guides the appropriate level of preservation, with the goal of retaining as much original fabric as possible, repairing rather than replacing wherever feasible, and minimizing disturbance to the building.”

Historic preservation requires understanding what makes a building unique and finding thoughtful solutions that allow its legacy to continue for generations to come.

Buchart Horn was invited by Generac to participate in a three-day symposium in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Casey Miller, PE and Electrical Designer, Olivia Goebel, represented BH last week, taking part in interactive tours of Generac’s world-class manufacturing facilities, industry-focused classes, and peer-to-peer networking opportunities.

Events like these allow our team to expand their knowledge, connect with industry professionals, and stay up to date with advancements and changes in the engineering industry. We’re grateful to Generac for the opportunity to continue learning and growing.

Benjamin Mikesell, PLA, PE has been promoted to Senior Civil Engineer. Ben has demonstrated a strong commitment to technical excellence, project delivery, collaboration, and client service. In addition to his new role, Ben serves as our current Civil Engineering Market Sector Leader, bringing a wealth of expertise and strategic insight to our teams.

Eric Trembly, PE will serve as our Water Market Sector Leader, helping align our technical capabilities and resources with the evolving needs of our municipal, authority, and utility clients.
