SMF is thrilled to be part of the design team for the new Consolidated Security Checkpoint at Richmond International Airport! ✈️

As highlighted in Richmond BizSense article, the proposed project will transform the airport’s existing security screening areas by combining the two separate, two-lane TSA checkpoints serving Concourses A and B into one expanded checkpoint with up to 14 lanes.

The project also includes a new second level near the airport atrium, featuring administrative offices, a grand hall, additional concession space, and a lounge.

We’re excited to be part of a project that will enhance the passenger experience and support the airport’s continued growth. We look forward to collaborating with the project team to bring this vision to life!

We had a great time at AIA Coastal Virginia’s Hard Hat Tour of the Barry Art Museum Expansion! It was exciting to get an up-close look at the project and highlight some of the unique structural engineering solutions bringing this addition to life.

The three-story, 24,600-square-foot addition will feature art exhibits on the first and second floors, with meeting spaces and offices on the third floor. The exterior combines precast concrete, brick veneer, metal panels, and channel glass to create a distinctive architectural presence.

One of the project’s most unique engineering challenges is a reinforced concrete cistern vault located beneath the building to collect rooftop rainwater. With limited site space available, placing the cistern below the building was essential to meeting the City’s requirements. Making this unconventional solution possible required creative collaboration between Saunders + Crouse Architects, SMF, VHB, and the rest of the design team.

Thank you to AIA Coastal Virginia for hosting a great tour and giving us the opportunity to showcase the collaboration, coordination, and innovative problem-solving behind this exciting project!

We’re thrilled to be part of the team behind the Virginia Peninsula Community College Newport News Trades Center, recipient of the 2026 Engineering News-Record (ENR) MidAtlantic Best Small Project Award! 🎉

This 16,000-square-foot, single-story facility is designed to prepare the next generation of skilled trades professionals, supporting Newport News Shipbuilding and the region’s growing manufacturing industries.

The center features administrative offices, classrooms, specialized shop spaces, and flexible training areas for welding, metal fabrication, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC instruction. A standout feature is the 25-by-25-foot partial submarine mock-up, providing students with a unique, hands-on training experience.

We’re proud to have contributed our structural engineering expertise to a project that invests in workforce development and strengthens the future of the region’s skilled trades.

There was such a great turnout at the Commercial Coffee for The Hues at City View!

We’re excited to be part of this unique project, which thoughtfully incorporates the original smokestack into the design, with high-end apartment units built around it and nearly 200 structured parking spaces below. It’s exciting to see this mixed-use development take shape at the former Sampson Paint site!
