🚲 Happy Bike & Roll to School Day! 🚲
Remember the thrill of learning to ride a bike for the first time? That feeling of joy and independence stays with you. 🌞

As transportation planners and engineers, our job is to support the same sense of adventure by drawing attention to road safety needs in our communities. We can do that by designing spaces separated from cars, lowering driving speeds, and creating shorter crossing distances so children can get to school safely. 🚸

Today (and every day), let's work together to promote safe, active travel for the kids in our communities! 🌟

As a transportation engineering and planning firm, biking is very important to us. A large portion of our team bikes to work every day, many of our offices are certified Bike Friendly Businesses, and we work on lots of projects that improve bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. So, when comes around, we get excited. 🤗

We love planning and designing safe, comfortable bicycle facilities in our communities to help folks get around in a fun, active way. This month, we'll be highlighting all things biking. So stay tuned and happy riding! 🚲

🌟 Specialist Appreciation Week 🌟

Bird watching, teaching, and community building, oh my! Jo Fernbrook is a senior office administrator in our Portland office who works behind the scenes with our team all over the country to provide positive, productive, and supportive environments for everyone at the firm.

Their background in education gives them strong organizational and interpersonal skills that help them wrangle the details of multiple offices in the same way they once managed the many moving parts of a classroom. In their spare time, Jo can be found bird watching, exploring nature, and making art. 🤝

"The admin team plays an important role in shaping how things function at Kittelson, and it’s rewarding to know that our work makes an impact."

For Randall Chesson—senior marketing coordinator in Raleigh—assembling a marketing proposal and crafting one-of-a-kind pens and bowls go hand in hand. Both are a creative outlet that leave a lasting impression. Randall finds a lot of fulfillment in his role because it blends strategy, storytelling, and collaboration.

He appreciates staying connected with teammates in different offices working together on proposals and serving on the safety committee. In his free time, he enjoys working on his wood lathe and is deeply involved in his church community. 🎨

"Being part of a team that contributes to meaningful change gives me a strong sense of purpose."

What do the Army National Guard, problem solving skills, and a people-first mindset have in common? They each reflect the character and values Crystal Phillips brings to her work as one of our dedicated HR professionals in Florida. For Crystal, approaching every situation with empathy and humanity is one of the most important aspects of her job.

She enjoys solving problems and removing roadblocks to help our team focus on doing what they do best. Outside of work, you can find Crystal hiking, weightlifting, and spending quality time with her children.

"What fills my cup the most is helping people feel seen, supported, and set up for success."

🌟 Specialist Appreciation Week 🌟

Alexander Hamilton may write like he's running out of time, but does he write like Leanne Mason—senior marketing coordinator in our Orange office? Doubtful. Leanne has spent her entire professional life working in the AEC industry, which means she's written over 500 proposals during her career. That's an estimated 1.5 million words!

Two of her biggest assets as a team member are her infectious energy (mostly fueled by sugary treats) and her ability to interact with people from all walks of life. These traits give her the ability to connect staff, clients, and community members through storytelling. Outside of work, Leanne enjoys her dogs, hiking, strength training, culinary experimentation, and the NYT Crossword. ✍️

"I love translating technical work into something people can connect to."

One of the best ways to figure out how to explain a highly complex topic is to pretend like you are talking to a five-year-old. 💡

Plus, you never know when you’ll have an opportunity to actually talk to five-year-olds about transportation planning! That's exactly what Associate Planner, Scott Curry did at his daughter's preschool recently. And the ideas—like replacing barriers in our neighborhoods with gardens, zoos, and trees to climb—that they came up with for the Charlotte IDEAS Festival might rival some of our own. 👀
