Cheers to 28 years!

Today we celebrate the retirement of our Managing Principal, Matt Dolan, PE, after 28 years with KPFF and 13 years leading our Portland, Eugene, and Washington DC Civil and Survey offices.

A leader who never took himself too seriously but always took the work and the people to heart. From mining engineer to leading projects around the world, Matt’s impact reaches far beyond KPFF. From hospitals across Oregon to U.S. embassies in more than 80 countries, his work speaks for itself. When he stepped into leadership in 2013, our Oregon civil team was 50 strong. Today it has grown to more than 100.

Matt led with empathy, showed up for his team, and reminded us there is always a solution. “I think I found my home.” And he helped create that same feeling for so many others. Grateful for the leadership, the relationships, and the legacy you leave behind.

He’s passed the baton, and next week the Oregon and DC Civil and Survey offices will be in the capable hands of Principal Daan Dommels.

Enjoy retirement, Matt!

Today’s reminder that transportation is more than just getting from point A to B 🚲

From a PE teacher who started a once-a-week “bike bus” that’s grown into a nationwide movement, to stories of growing up relying on walking, biking, and transit, today’s conversations all pointed to the same thing: access matters.

and emphasized the importance of investing in multimodal systems, improving infrastructure, and creating safer, more accessible ways for communities to move. Because thoughtful transportation design doesn’t just connect places, it connects people.

Creating spaces where everyone has the ability to move freely and safely.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

At KPFF, Earth Day is kind of an everyday thing. The work goes beyond design, it’s about protecting the places we call home. Stormwater isn’t just something we move, it’s something we manage with intention, helping keep our communities resilient and our waterways cleaner. A lot of it happens behind the scenes, but it all adds up to making a lasting impact. 🌱

A different kind of coastal escape 🌲🌊

Old-growth forest and ocean views make Two Capes Lookout a prime getaway destination.

This glamping site features heated geodesic domes, offering a unique way to experience the outdoors with the comfort of modern amenities.

Erosion control and site protection were at the core of our civil work, supporting the placement of 9 new geodesic domes, 6 glamping tent sites, a caretaker unit, and 4 cabins.

KPFF supported site upgrades including utilities, access, and erosion control, working collaboratively to develop effective, sustainable solutions that protect the landscape. This project is a reminder that successful design is rooted in flexibility, communication, and forward-thinking solutions.

Designing with nature in mind. The new Sunrise Water Authority’s Administrative & Field Operations Facility is shaped by sustainable design solutions that work with the natural environment.

KPFF’s civil engineers navigated wetlands and steep slopes to:
🌱 minimize soil disturbance
🌻 protect the natural environment
💧 develop sustainable stormwater solutions

The result? Vegetated basins, channels, and swales that naturally guide stormwater across the landscape, reflecting Sunrise’s mission of adaption and operational excellence.
