The commanding officer of the USS George Washington says Iranian attempts to strike ships near the Strait of Hormuz have been unsuccessful.
Speaking to reporters on October 20, Capt. Nicholas DeLeo said Iran had tried to strike "a variety of ships" in the area. "Those have all been unsuccessful, and I can tell you that reason is 100% due to our sailors on this ship," he said.
He did not specify which ships were targeted. The account comes from the Navy and has not been independently verified.
The carrier is operating in the Arabian Sea, supporting the US blockade of Iran and providing cover for commercial ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz. In September, the Navy confirmed Iran had attempted to hit US warships with ballistic missiles.
Separately, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to the region this week. Axios reported he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Pentagon declined to comment on the reports.
