Let it rain!!!!

It’s good to have downspouts, but it’s even better to have them pointing in the right direction.

Downspouts are designed to collect roof runoff and carry it away from the home. When they discharge directly beside the foundation, they can contribute to erosion and oversaturation of the soils supporting the footing.

If that condition is left uncorrected over time, the supporting soils can lose strength or erode, which may contribute to foundation settlement.

When significant settlement has already occurred, correction may require underpinning the affected foundation with a deeper foundation system, such as properly designed piers that transfer the structural load to more competent bearing material below.

The better approach is prevention.

Extend downspouts far enough away from the structure so the water can continue to drain without collecting near the foundation. In some cases, downspouts can also be connected to a solid underground piping system that carries the water away and discharges to daylight at a lower area of the site.

Whichever method is used, the surrounding ground should still slope away from the home so water keeps moving in the right direction.

Collect the water.
Carry it away.
Protect the supporting soils.

Bare clay is clay waiting to be baked.

One of the fastest ways for Oklahoma clay to lose moisture is to leave it completely exposed to the summer sun — especially along the south and west sides of a home.

Where practical, maintain healthy vegetation around your home. Grass and appropriate landscaping shade the soil, reduce direct sun exposure, and help slow moisture loss from the underlying clay.

The goal is consistent soil moisture — not oversaturated mud or water collecting against the foundation. Moisture should be applied slowly and uniformly, while ensuring the ground surface continues to slope and drain water away from the house.

If additional dirt is needed to close shrinkage gaps or rebuild the grade, use clean, compactable fill dirt with low organic content that is compatible with the surrounding soil.

Avoid using compost, mulch, potting soil, or organic-rich garden mixes as the main fill beside your foundation. As these materials decompose, they can lose volume, settle, and retain excessive moisture.

After the fill dirt has been properly compacted and graded to slope away from the home, suitable topsoil and a modest amount of compost can be added to the surface growing layer to help establish healthy vegetation.

The key distinction is simple:

Organic material belongs in the growing layer — not as the main fill used to close soil shrinkage gaps or build up the grade beside your foundation.

☀️ Protect the soil.
🌱 Maintain vegetation.
🚜 Use the right fill.
💧 Maintain consistency.

In response to the recent KFOR news interview, we’ve been asked several times, “Should I water my foundation?”

We never recommend that people “water their foundation.” We recommend maintaining a reasonably consistent moisture content in the soil surrounding the home.

The phrase “water your foundation” can be misleading. As we structurally inspect properties we’ve seen people spray water directly on the concrete or pour large amounts of water against the foundation and into open shrinkage cracks. That is not the goal.

During hot, dry Oklahoma weather, when additional moisture is needed, use a soaker hose, drip-irrigation line, or low-volume misting hose placed approximately 12 to 18 inches away from the foundation. Apply moisture slowly and uniformly without ponding or oversaturating the soil.

The goal is not to soak the foundation. The goal is to help maintain reasonably consistent moisture in the surrounding clay soil.

If large shrinkage gaps or fissures have already developed, simply filling those openings with water is not the solution. Lightly moisten the clay until it becomes workable, then scarify, remold, and compact the soil back against the foundation before beginning a consistent moisture-maintenance routine.

What wrong with this picture?

FYI - It is the side of a residential home, the right is the concrete foundation stem wall with brick veneer, to the left is dirt.
