This weekend, Scott Cramer, KL’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Leadership Officer, was inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Throughout his coaching career, Scott has led teams in Verona, Whitefish Bay, and Grafton. During his 24 seasons coaching at Verona, the Wildcats earned 12 conference championships, and Scott was named Conference Assistant Coach of the Year seven times.

Scott has always approached coaching with the goal of developing players who would want to coach themselves. In a recent season, the Wildcats’ coaching staff included 10 former players Scott once coached. These enduring relationships and lifelong bonds are what Scott is most proud of.

The commitment Scott has shown to his players carries directly into the way he leads at KL Engineering. His focus on developing people, building trust, and creating a strong foundation for success reflects the same leadership principles he brings to the football field. This approach aligns closely with our company culture and our shared values of integrity, personal growth, and teamwork.

Delivering value does not stop at construction. It continues throughout the life of a project.

The USH 14 Reconstruction in The City of Westby, Wisconsin received a 2026 Wisconsin Department of Transportation Excellence in Highway Design Award in the Best Urban Design by a Consultant category. The project shows how thoughtful design can create long-term value for the community. From the start, KL Engineering focused on solutions that would reduce ongoing costs while improving performance.

The roundabout design eliminates the need for signal and electrical maintenance while improving traffic flow. Upgraded storm sewer infrastructure improves drainage and reliability. The pavement layout was optimized to reduce long-term maintenance needs and better manage stormwater runoff. In addition, narrow terrace areas were converted to concrete to reduce upkeep in locations where turf had struggled to grow.

By prioritizing lifecycle efficiency, the project delivers lasting value for both the City and its residents. It is a strong example of how smart design decisions today can lead to meaningful savings and better outcomes in the future.

We’re proud to share that the USH 14 Reconstruction Project in Westby, Wisconsin recently received the 2026 Wisconsin Department of Transportation Excellence in Highway Design Award for Best Urban Design by a Consultant.

Delivering this project required thoughtful coordination across a wide range of stakeholders, design priorities, and community needs. The team worked through several key challenges, including designing a roundabout that could accommodate oversized and overweight vehicles while still operating safely and efficiently for everyday traffic. Another important focus was improving pedestrian connectivity by closing sidewalk gaps and creating safer access to schools, businesses, and other daily destinations.

Utility coordination also played a major role. KL Engineering partnered closely with the Westby Electric Department and Vernon Communications to relocate and upgrade infrastructure in a way that supported construction efficiency and minimized disruptions.

Throughout the process, the team remained focused on preserving the character of downtown Westby. The final design reflects both strong technical performance and a clear connection to the surrounding community.
This project is a great example of how coordination and partnership can lead to successful outcomes.

We are excited to welcome Lila Hadfield to KL as a design intern based out of our Madison office. She is currently pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Lila brings extensive internship experience in construction and structural engineering, including site walks and inspections, as well as contributing to engineering documents, plans, and reporting. She serves as Social Chair for the UW-Madison chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and has held the role of QA/QC Lead for the Concrete Canoe Team for several years. Lila will work part-time during the spring semester and transition to full-time hours over the summer.
