In the early days a lot of oil consumption was caused by leaky valve guide seals. Many engine like this IHC only have an oring seal way up on the retainer so any splash that would make it bother intake valve stem would leak down the guide and end up in the port then combustion chamber. We machine the guides to accept a modern positive style valve seal on the intake valves. Ww leave the exhaust alone in fear of not tubing the exhaust stems enough. Generally the pressure in the exhaust port keeps the oil in the guide.
