A dedicated pool room dehumidification system is essential for ensuring healthy indoor air quality, enhancing building longevity, and maximizing occupant comfort.

1. Moisture Control = Healthier Air
Indoor pools constantly evaporate, releasing moisture and chloramines—compounds formed when chlorine interacts with sweat and organic materials. Without an effective dehumidification system, these irritants can cause eye, skin, and respiratory issues, exacerbating conditions like asthma. A specialized dehumidifier removes excess moisture and chloramine-laden air, replacing it with filtered, dry air, creating a fresh and breathable environment.

2. Protecting the Building Envelope
High humidity can lead to significant damage. When moisture condenses on surfaces, it promotes mold growth, corrosion, and rot, compromising insulation and structural integrity over time. A dedicated pool room dehumidifier maintains humidity levels (typically 50–60% RH) and ensures uniform air movement, preventing cold spots and condensation.

3. Energy Efficiency and Comfort
Unlike standard HVAC systems, pool room dehumidifiers are designed to recover energy from the air to heat the pool water, lowering heating and cooling costs. They stabilize air and water temperatures, keeping swimmers comfortable.

4. Compliance and Reputation
For commercial facilities, such as hotels and recreation centers, indoor air quality is crucial for user experience and reputation. A dedicated dehumidification system helps meet ASHRAE standards for indoor air quality, ensuring a clean and well-managed environment. Poor indoor air quality can lead to complaints and health issues, which can be mitigated through proper environmental control.

A pool room without a dedicated dehumidification system poses risks of moisture damage, poor air quality, and health hazards. A well-designed system guarantees:
- Healthy, breathable air free of chloramines
- Protection of building investments
- Energy-efficient operation
- Comfort and satisfaction for all occupants

• ASHRAE highlights the importance of maintaining negative air pressure in natatoriums relative to outdoors and adjacent areas. This helps prevent condensation issues and ensures the dispersion of chloramines and fumes is controlled. The space pressurization scheme must be upheld consistently throughout the year and under all operating conditions.

• Natatoriums are one of the most underestimated building types to design correctly. These require highly specialized niche consultants and builders to do it right. Many architects, engineers, and builders have learned the hard way with very expensive fixes years later, primarily due to basic moisture and corrosion issues.

• Takeaway: latent energy removal is an entirely different animal than sensible removal. Design your buildings with latent and sensible loads in mind. Invest up front, with the right engineers to understand the load profiles and the right specialty equipment to address these loads efficiently and effectively.

Is your aging indoor pool facility facing high heating or dehumidification bills? Is your HVACD system nearing the end of its life? Do you need to upgrade with a replacement?

If you want the right solution, look for a purpose-built indoor pool dehumidification system that can consistently:

• Maintains ASHRAE recommended relative humidity of 50% and 60%. Lower relative humidity increases operation costs due to increased evaporation and can lead to shivering kids due to evaporative cooling from their bodies when they get out of the water. Higher relative humidity makes the air feel heavy and sticky and fogs windows while increasing the risk of corrosion to building structure.

• Creates precise air-to-water temperature balance. Keep air 2 to 4°F warmer than the pool water, usually 84°F to 86°F. This prevents rapid evaporation and lowers the facility’s thermal load, preventing shivering students.

• Removes chloramines and other disinfection byproducts generated from the pool and sit right on the water's surface, causing eye irritation, coughing, and respiratory issues for children and instructors. These gases need to be captured at their source near the pool surface and exhausted out of the facility. This is part of a holistic approach for better air and water quality.

• Recovers energy from the hot, humid exhaust air using a RecoverAire™ unit to recycle heat to provide "free" heating for the pool water or the incoming fresh outdoor air, can reduce monthly gas and electric expenses.

The goal in managing heating, cooling, and moisture loads is sustainability: ensuring that the natatorium or indoor pool room can continue to fulfill the purposes for which it was built in a safe and cost-effective way. Desert Aire’s SelectAire system https://lnkd.in/gSuWAwKb meets this goal and in various sizes and pool environments.

If you’re stuck while getting through a diagnostic sequence in a controller, you can call our service support team (262-946-7400) that consists of live humans who talk to you on the phone. It’s not glamourous. It’s considered old school.

We didn’t assign a chatbot to this duty. Desert Aire customers don’t get that treatment. The person on the phone is one that has spent hours working on HVACD equipment, in tight mechanical rooms, on hot roofs in all kinds of weather. When you call, you have their full attention. They take your issue seriously.

When support is becoming more automated as the default, Desert Aire’s human on the other end of the phone is more valuable. Instead of watching video footage on YouTube searching for your answer, you can call and talk to a human who has the answer. Before you Google, call Desert Aire Service Team at 262-946-7400 weekdays 8am-5pm CST and ask to speak to our service or parts team.
