The Challenge💥 A rapidly eroding Missouri River bank threatened eight properties along Hogue Island in Bismarck, ND.

The Solution💡Working alongside the Burleigh County Water Resource District, North Dakota Department of Water Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local landowners, HEI designed and implemented a bank stabilization system that restored and protected approximately 950 feet of shoreline, helping reduce future erosion risks and protect nearby properties. From feasibility study to implementation, it's exciting to see years of planning and collaboration progress toward construction.

Our team was honored to work with the Okabena-Ocheda Watershed District and Worthington Public Schools to help evaluate options and develop a path forward for this site. Thank you for the partnership and commitment to creating lasting benefits for the community and Lake Okabena. We look forward to watching the project continue to take shape. 💧🌱

Not just hanging around.

Actually, we kind of are. 😄 If you zoom in behind this week's NDDOT selfie, you'll spot members of the HEI team assisting with bridge inspection work. Proud to partner with NDDOT to help keep North Dakota's infrastructure safe and well maintained.

This week's selfie comes from Jesse K., Jennifer K., and interns Zack and Connor. North Dakota's bridges are routinely inspected at least every two years, as required by the Federal Highway Administration. Our bridge inspectors are busy inspecting structures from April 1 – Nov. 31 each year. Thanks for ensuring our structures are safe and well-maintained!

The Challenge💥 Bridge 89595 located on CSAH 42 on the Norman County/Mahnomen County border in Minnesota was prone to flood overtopping.

The Solution 💡 HEI's team effectively modeled flood event levels to determine an optimal roadway and bridge profile to reduce flooding and minimize impacts upstream and downstream.

The community can enjoy a safer, more reliable transportation corridor through this bridge replacement and approach roadway improvement project, which enhances connectivity while preserving the natural channel below. 🚙💧

Kyle Werning had the privilege of presenting alongside City of Sioux Falls staff on the recently completed floodplain studies for Skunk Creek and the Big Sioux River. What a great few days at the 2026 Minnesota Watersheds Summer Tour!

HEI was proud to sponsor the event and enjoyed connecting with partners from across Minnesota while seeing firsthand the important work happening around the state.
