Every saw cut removes a little wood, and over a full log, those cuts add up.

Reducing kerf by just 1/32 of an inch across 32 cuts adds up to one inch less wood removed along the cutting path. Now, that doesn’t automatically translate into an extra board. Log size, sawing pattern, target dimensions and cutting accuracy all affect what a mill can recover. But it shows why a seemingly small difference deserves attention when you’re making cut after cut, shift after shift.

Sometimes, getting more from a log starts with looking at what becomes sawdust.

From our shop in Eau Claire to Canyon Lumber in Everett, Washington, this McDonough 6-7A Double Cut Band Mill is heading west!

Equipped with a Linear Positioning Top Guide, steel slat bed table, top wheel guard and 200 HP motor, it’s ready for its next chapter at Canyon Lumber.

Getting more value from each cant starts with the decisions made before the cut.

OptiX MAXX brings together McDonough’s automated resaw technology and Automation & Electronics’ OptiX vision optimization, connecting how material is scanned and evaluated with how it’s turned and sawn.

The goal is practical: better recovery and more consistent results across shifts. It can also be integrated into existing McDonough resaw systems, giving mills a way to add optimization while continuing to use equipment they already have.

Dakota Rud grew up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and got into the maintenance field young because he liked figuring out how machines work. That curiosity brought him to McDonough, where he's now part of building sawmill equipment from the ground up.

His background gives him a practical perspective on the shop floor, understanding how components come together and how they need to perform once a machine is running in a mill.

Outside of work, Dakota is usually under the hood of his convertible or at a drift event. He's also a dad to a 10-year-old son, with a growing family ahead of him. We're glad to have him on the team.

Supporting a sawmill takes teamwork, and that work reaches across our locations.

In this video, Chris is working on roll cases for a sawmill customer at the BID Canada shop in Woodstock, NB. It’s one example of how BID and McDonough work together to support the mills we serve.

Our teams in Eau Claire and Woodstock share knowledge and bring their skills together to meet customer needs. Having that experience across both locations helps us look at the whole job, coordinate the work and keep customer service at the centre of it.

Thanksgiving comes a little earlier north of the border, but it’s always a good time to thank the people who make our work possible. We appreciate everything our Canadian team brings to McDonough and the relationships we’ve built across both sides of the border.
