There is only so much you can learn about a piece of equipment from a photo or a list of specifications. Seeing it running gives you a much better sense of how the material moves, how the different components work together and what the equipment actually looks like in an operating mill.

Our machine shop has been busy lately, with a whole lot of saw collars making their way through production.

On an edger, saw collars secure and support the saw blades on the arbor, helping keep them properly positioned and running true. That stability matters when you’re making accurate, consistent cuts board after board. They may be a relatively small part of the overall machine, but when you’re talking about equipment designed around accuracy and yield, the details matter.

When you're looking for ways to improve performance at the headrig, the carriage is worth a closer look.

Small issues with positioning, control or repeatability can add up over the course of a shift. And if the carriage can't consistently put the log where it needs to be, the saw can't do its job as effectively either.

Carriage performance plays a big role in giving the sawing process a consistent starting point, cut after cut.

If you're looking at where improvements could be made in your mill, the carriage may be part of the answer.

The decisions made before a cant reaches the resaw can have a significant impact on lumber recovery.

Grading, positioning and feeding all play a role in the process, and inconsistencies at any of these stages can affect the value of the finished product. How a board is edged can have a big impact on the value you get from it.

In a USDA Forest Service study of three hardwood sawmills, manual edging recovered just 62–78% of the potential lumber value identified through computer optimization.

Of course, finding the best cut is only half the job; the board still has to stay where you put it. Keeping the piece in position as it moves into the saw helps make sure the cut the optimizer selected is the cut that actually gets made. That’s where a controlled infeed and a belt that keeps the piece in place can make a difference.

Getting the most out of a linear edger often comes down to something pretty simple: keeping everything running in a straight line.

Belt tracking, humps or twists in the belt path, uneven transition areas and saw calibration can all affect how a board travels through the system and, ultimately, the recovery and value you get from your edger.
