As eVTOL battery manufacturing continues to evolve, ensuring spot weld quality without slowing production is more important than ever.

This week at the ASNT Research Symposium 2026, EWI Applications Engineer Lindsey Lindamood will present "Laser Ultrasonic Inspection of Spot Welds for eVTOL Aircraft Batteries" on Wednesday, July 22, at 11:00 AM.

Her presentation explores how laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) can be used to characterize weld quality and pe*******on in thin-gauge metallic joints. The research demonstrates measurable differences in laser ultrasonic signals that correlate with weld pe*******on depth and joint continuity, highlighting the potential of this nondestructive approach to evaluate spot weld quality in next-generation eVTOL battery systems.

As structural castings become larger and more complex, manufacturers are rethinking how casting defects are repaired.

Could additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) provide a more effective alternative to conventional repair methods?

In a new paper from EWI, engineers Jerry Kovacich, Rafael Giorjao, and Michael Eff evaluate AFSD as a solid-state process for repairing structural castings. The research includes process development and mechanical testing of A380 aluminum and C95500 nickel aluminum bronze (NAB), offering new insights into the technology's potential for structural repair.

The research explores:
• Why conventional arc welding is becoming less viable for structural casting repair
• How AFSD avoids hot cracking and porosity associated with fusion-based processes
• Mechanical testing results for AFSD-deposited NAB
• The potential of AFSD for gigacasting and other structural casting applications

Attending the ASME Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference 2026?

EWI researchers will share their latest work through two technical presentations addressing hydrogen infrastructure and weld performance.

Monday, July 20:
Applications Engineer Jesse Rhodes will present "Feasibility of Welded X80 Casings for Hydrogen Storage." His research evaluates welded X80 casing materials for underground hydrogen storage, examining welding procedures, consumable selection, and material performance under high-pressure hydrogen conditions.

Thursday, July 23:
Principal Engineer Bill Mohr will present "Welding Failure of an Oil Well Threaded Connection During Preheating for Seal Welding" during the Performance of Welds in the Energy Sector Workshop, contributing to discussions on weld failures, failure investigations, and research that advances the industry's understanding of weld performance and reliability.
