Important Update.

We have made the decision to hide some of our Facebook profiles, including this account, meaning they will no longer be publicly accessible, and we will no longer be posting or engaging organically on the platform from these channels. These changes will come into effect from 21 November 2025.

Due to recent changes to the algorithm, our organic posts are no longer reaching our audiences as effectively and aren’t achieving the level of visibility or engagement we aim for. We also know that a large portion of our audience prefers to engage with us on other platforms and is already doing so. That said, we value all of our audience and will continue to connect with you here through our sponsored (paid) posts.

These posts typically reach and engage the most people on Facebook, so there should be very little disruption to how often you see IET updates and opportunities in your feed. The main change will be that there won’t be a visible page for you to click through or contact us directly from here.

If you’d like to get in touch, you can still reach us through our other social media channels on Instagram ( - https://www.instagram.com/theiet/) or LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/school/iet/), or via phone or email — full details can be found here: theiet.org/about/contact-us.

Did you know over a third of Brits have no idea what to do after a cyber hack? 🔒

With cyberattacks on the rise, protecting your personal data has never been more important.

Here's how you can strengthen your online security with our top tips:

- Use strong and unique passwords or passphrases: Choose long, randomly generated passwords or passphrases made from three unrelated words.

- Protect your email accounts with extra care: Combine passwords with biometrics (e.g., fingerprint, Face ID) and a secure device PIN.

- Use a password manager and explore password-less authentication: Consider modern authentication methods like passkeys, biometrics or hardware security keys.

- Enable Two-Factor Authentication to all your critical accounts: Add an extra layer of protection to your accounts.

- Back up your data securely: Use trusted cloud services or encrypted external drives to protect against data loss or ransomware attacks.

- Stay alert to phishing and scams: Never click on suspicious links or attachments. Always make sure to verify emails, messages and websites - especially if they ask to provide personal or financial information.

This World Space Week, we’re celebrating the people shaping the future of space exploration and inspiring others to reach for the stars. 💫

Meet Patrick Capaldo, IET volunteer and an AI Engineer at Airbus, whose journey into aerospace began with a childhood fascination with space.

This passion helped him complete his engineering studies and has since propelled him into a career filled with exciting opportunities – from contributing to NASA’s Artemis Mission, the OneSat project, to publishing research papers and hosting expert panels on AI and aerospace.

His advice for anyone looking to enter the world of aerospace?

“When it comes to making yourself unique in the job market, your main differentiators are your interests and your personality - so this is what you should use as your North Star for building things. Doing this will help you maintain interest in your projects, make it easier to speak to when networking or applying for jobs, and just to make you stand out amongst others.”

Do you have a fascination for space? Let us know in the comments!

Happy Birthday to Charles Merz!

Today we celebrate the visionary electrical engineer whose two-month journey to the USA helped shape the future of modern electrical power systems that we still rely on today.

Affectionately known as the 'Grid King’ by his peers, Charles Merz was behind some of the most transformative innovations in energy infrastructure.

From designing “super power stations” to integrating the North East coast’s electrical supply and shaping the National Grid as we know it, his legacy continues to power progress and inspire many aspiring electricians and engineers across the globe.

One of the finest engineers of his generation, Merz deserves lasting recognition for his groundbreaking achievements and impact.

This Cyber Security Awareness month brings a stark reminder of the growing digital threats facing the UK. Staying safe is not optional but essential.

Today we’ve launched new consumer research revealing there’s a rising sense of fear across the UK, with one in three people witnessing more cyberattacks this year than in previous years.

Our research delves further into how the UK public feels about their online safety and whether they believe businesses are doing enough to protect their personal data. And the results are eye-opening...

Commenting on the research, our cybersecurity expert and Fellow Junade Ali said:

“Cybersecurity remains a key threat to our critical national infrastructure and to our own lives. These findings show that while awareness of cyber threats is growing, there’s still a gap in confidence and preparedness. We must continue to educate and empower the public to take control of their digital safety. By following best practice, and staying alert, we can all help secure ourselves and society at large.”

Championing women and girls in STEM with the WISE Young Professionals' Board.

Founded with WISE, the YPB is on a mission to make STEM more inclusive, authentic, and representative, by engaging young women, amplifying real stories, and building a supportive community.

That mission inspired the Unfiltered STEM podcast: a candid series tackling imposter syndrome, workplace harassment, and the everyday challenges women face in STEM.

As Dawn Ohlson steps into her role as our new President, she’s placing volunteers at the centre of her vision for the year ahead.

She recognises their crucial role in not just outreach, but in shaping the future of engineering and technology itself in inspiring the next generation.

“Without our volunteers, we just couldn’t possibly have the reach that we do.”

This year, Dawn is committed to celebrating the value volunteers bring, strengthening the networks between them, and helping more people discover what volunteering can do for their own growth.

Because when volunteers connect, share and thrive, so does the profession.
