The summer holidays are officially here! ☀️

Maybe you have some sightseeing planned, or perhaps you are counting down the days until you're sipping cocktails on the beach. But did you know that early IMechE members also had summer trips?

Since the 1850s, members visited a different destination each year. These were multi-day trips full of visits to engineering places of interest, dinners, and the Summer Meeting itself. Programmes and badges were made for each year, and by 1907, a Ladies' Committee was established, with a separate Ladies' Programme for the wives of members.

Our archive volunteer, Lizzie MacAskill, has been working with the Summer Meeting collection, and shares her insights in our new blog post: https://imechearchive.wordpress.com/2026/07/16/imeche-summer-meetings/

This kicks off our Summer Meeting series, where we will be exploring different destinations the Institution visited 🗺️

David Andrews has been elected as the new Chair of our Engineering Heritage Committee🛞

An archaeologist turned engineer, David brings a unique perspective to the Committee. After seven years as an archaeologist in the UK and Peru, David moved into engineering, spending 25 years designing diesel engines before turning his focus to the electrification of construction machinery.

A member of the Institution’s Engineering Heritage Committee since 2007, David has supported collaborations with museums and galleries, created engineering heritage content and shared his passion for railways and engineering history through published articles.

We look forward to working with David as he helps celebrate the stories, innovations and people that have shaped engineering.

🏎️ The wait is over. The garages are opening. The moment of truth has arrived.

After months of designing, building, testing and countless late nights, Formula Student teams are arriving at Silverstone with the cars they've spent the past year bringing to life.

Today, the paddock comes alive as garages are built, cars are unloaded and engineering theory becomes reality.

For many students, this is the first time they'll see a year's worth of hard work lined up alongside some of the brightest engineering talent from across the UK and beyond.

This is where future engineers become race engineers.

Welcome to Formula Student 2026. Let the competition begin 🏁
