— interesting to look back at this adaptive reuse project in Northumberland, which involved the conversion of an agricultural building into four residential units.

Great to see how traditional buildings can be successfully repurposed while retaining their character.

It's Rewind Wednesday!

In this instance, we were able to demolish the existing agricultural sheds and these beautiful stone properties were designed to take their place. The design was completed sympathetically to the local architecture and subsequently the development blends into this quiet Northumberland village like it has always been there.

Great to see works moving forward on this residential development in Northumberland, that brings together the conversion of agricultural buildings and a small number of new-build homes.

Fantastic to see continued progress on this Northumberland site, delivering two impressive new residential homes.

We would like to provide an update regarding the chimney collapse at Hallstile Bank.

We had hoped to share an update sooner, as it had appeared that we were close to confirming a start date for works on site. However, progress has been affected by a number of factors outside of our direct control.

We fully appreciate that this situation is far from ideal for all those affected. Please be assured that we have been proactive throughout and have been doing everything possible to move matters forward. There have been no delays or lack of action attributable to any individual or organisation.

The chimney remains suspended within the building. Consequently, safety remains our top priority. We were very fortunate that no one was injured at the time of the collapse, and it is essential that this remains the case.

Progress has been dependent on input and approvals from third parties, including insurers, who have been dealing with complex ownership and liability matters.
In addition, work to properties 5–7 cannot proceed until properties 1–3 have been made safe, including rebuilding the gable wall. This requires approval from the current owners (the receiver), who have been unable to proceed until the sale of the building is completed.

We understand that the sale of the former ex-servicemen’s club is now the final step. We have been advised that this is progressing positively and hope that completion is imminent, which will allow works to move forward.

Another Planning Approval!

This project involved alterations to an existing property, enabling the clients to enjoy their retirement with a sea view.

It certainly wasn’t a straightforward journey, requiring several rounds of amendments, but we’re delighted to have reached a solution the client is truly happy with, well done team.

Also, many thanks to Tony Carter MSc MRTPI for his input and efforts in helping us get there — another top-class service from Carter-Smith Planning Consultants.

In the meantime, we managed to secure conditional Building Regulations Approval. We now look forward to progressing to tender stage.

Our Architectural Team has invested in a new laser scanner!

This technology allows buildings to be surveyed quickly and accurately, with the data then converted into detailed 3D models using Revit. Previously, our in-house land surveyors amr Geomatics (Northern) Limited (RICS) carried out all laser scanning work. They will still play a key role on larger and more complex projects, however, because many of Crawford Higgins Associates’ commissions are smaller in scale, this new handheld scanner provides a practical and efficient solution for the majority of work.

One of the key drivers behind this investment was to increase capacity and flexibility—making it easier to schedule surveys and respond more efficiently to client needs.

There is also a clear benefit in having the architectural team carry out the surveys themselves, equipping them with an additional skill and service offering. Also, early involvement allows for a deeper understanding of each building, leading to more informed design decisions and an enhanced level of service.

Compared to manual measuring, laser scanning significantly reduces the risk of missing critical details. It also captures a greater level of information, context and often identifies elements that may not be immediately visible on site.

That said, laser scanning is not always the most cost-effective solution. At CHA, we carefully assesses each project on an individual basis, ensuring that the chosen approach aligns with both the client’s needs and budget.

Supporting and educating the next generation is something we’re really passionate about.

We're proud that last month some of our staff attended a Built Environment event at Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham, on behalf of Crawford Higgins Associates and NAWIC North East and Tees Valley.

It was part of the Year 12 personal development time focused on options for after Sixth Form.

Thank you to Jess and Anna for speaking, along with Toby and James who joined in the Q&A—great effort from the team.

We hope it inspired at least some students to explore and consider whether a career in the built environment could be right for them.

Events like this are a great opportunity—and so important in highlighting the wide range of careers the industry has to offer.

Rewind Wednesday.

Always good to revisit a past project and the journey behind it, reflecting on the detail, collaboration and effort that shaped the final result.

Such as this new build residential property in the North East.
