QUT HeartBeats in Suzhou, China for Heart Hackathon Grand Finals! 🫀💙

Last week QUT HeartBeats had the opportunity to present our Total Artificial Heart project at the ISMCS 2026 conference in Suzhou, China. Representing QUT on an international stage was truly an exciting experience and a reflection of the hard work and dedication that has gone into this project.

A huge congratulations to the winning teams on their outstanding achievements! With 17 teams representing 11 countries, the competition showcased remarkable innovation and unique approaches to tackling the challenges of artificial heart development. It was an invaluable opportunity to connect with like-minded teams who share our passion and gain new perspectives on the future of artificial heart technology.

A special thank you to all our QUT HeartBeats members for their hard work, commitment and countless hours dedicated to the project. We would also like to extend our gratitude to our academic supervisors, the Heart Hackathon team, ISMCS organisers and all the participating teams for making this such a memorable and rewarding experience.

We look forward to building on what we’ve learned and continuing to push the boundaries of artificial heart innovation. While we may not have taken home the win, QUT HeartBeats is dedicated to engineering real-world solutions, one heartbeat at a time 💙

Last week, our team presented our work at the x Biomedical Industry & Research Showcase 2026, bringing our Total Artificial Heart project alongside some of Brisbane’s leading biomedical researchers, industry organisations and student teams.

We had some fantastic engagement at our stall, with our members sharing the engineering behind our Total Artificial Heart and the progress we’ve made through the Heart Hackathon. Events like this give our students the opportunity to represent QUT, build genuine industry connections and showcase how engineering and medical engineering can come together to tackle real-world healthcare challenges.

A massive thank you to the QUT Heartbeats members who volunteered their time to run the stall and represent the team. The enthusiasm and technical knowledge you brought to every conversation was a great reflection of what this team is about. 💙🩷

Special recognition goes to our Clinical Lead, Eden C., who took the lead on our involvement in the showcase. Eden put a huge amount of work into making the night happen and did an outstanding job!

It was also fantastic to share the room with organisations including Cook Medical, Cochlear, Philips, Materialise,Vaxxas, BPEQ, Engineers Australia, Critical Care Research Group, Queensland Health, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Southern RNA 🧬 , Gelomics, Bionics Gamechangers Australia, and Kimaritec PTY LTD.

Thank you to UQ Biotechnology Society, UQ Biomedical Engineering Society (UQ BMES), QUT BiOMS, FoME QUT and all of the other student organisations involved in bringing the biomedical communities together.

It was fantastic to tour the Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF) this past week, hosted in collaboration with the QUT Fellowship of Medical Engineers (FoME).

Throughout the visit, the MERF team walked us through the full breadth of research underway at the facility, from early-stage device development through to the final in-vivo studies that de-risk a design before it’s ever cleared for the human market. Seeing that translational pipeline up close, the exact path our Total Artificial Heart project will need to follow, gave our team a much clearer picture of what “market-ready” actually demands beyond the bench.

As we head towards the Heart Hackathon Grand Final, opportunities like this are exactly what keep pushing QUT Heartbeats to think bigger about what our project needs to become a real, deployable medical device. We’re incredibly grateful to be part of a QUT engineering community that gives students this kind of access to world-class research infrastructure.
