Insurance history comes with some great stories. Lloyd’s began in Edward Lloyd’s coffee house in London in the 1680s, where merchants, shipowners and insurers met to exchange information and do business.

And here’s our favourite part: the coffee-house waiters soon became important information carriers, distributing messages and intelligence between customers.

More than 300 years later, brokers still play a vital role in bringing information and risks into the Lloyd’s market. The coffee may have improved. The importance of good information hasn’t.

When machines changed the world, insurance had to change with them.

As industrial machinery became more sophisticated, so did the risks. Traditional insurance wasn’t always designed for what could go wrong inside a machine.

And so specialist engineering insurance evolved.

Today, the technology looks very different. The principle remains the same: understand the engineering to understand the risk.

Happy anniversary to our dear friends at Camargue Underwriting Managers!

Cas Hansa and Prisha Bhoola had a wonderful time celebrating with the team last night.

What started from humble beginnings has grown into a truly formidable business in South Africa. Mitch and the team deserve huge credit for what they’ve built over the years — a great business, but more importantly, a great team and culture.

As Lucian takes the helm, we wish him all the very best for the next chapter. We know he has big shoes to fill, but we have every confidence that he’ll do a fantastic job.
