A 400-tonne mining shovel doesn't arrive on site in one piece.

Machines in this class, such as the Komatsu PC4000, are taken apart into modules for transport: undercarriage, upper house, boom, stick and bucket.

A specialist crew then rebuilds them on site. Moving a single unit can mean weeks of route planning, abnormal-load permits and crane work before the machine digs its first bucket.

There's a practical lesson here for anyone buying plant at any size. The price on the machine is only part of the cost. Transport, permits and commissioning all need to be on the budget from day one, and the bigger the machine, the more those hidden costs matter.

We help contractors and fleet owners in South Africa plan the full cost of getting the right used plant onto site.
