Work at Heights Wednesday: Serious injuries do not only happen from significant height.

The tendency on site is to weigh up the task, decide it looks quick and low, and skip the PPE and fall protection because putting it on feels like more effort than the job warrants.

It is too cumbersome, it will take too long, and the height is not that serious.
That reasoning is exactly how preventable incidents happen, because the decision to skip protection is made based on how the height looks, not on what a fall from that height actually does to a person.

The preparation, the equipment, and the assessment apply from the moment a worker is exposed to a fall risk.

The height does not determine the standard.

Ordering PPE without knowing what the hazards on site are means the people wearing it are carrying risks that nobody measured.

Fit-for-purpose PPE starts with understanding the environment.

The specific substances, temperatures, physical risks, and tasks that workers are exposed to every day should determine what gets ordered, not what worked on a previous site or what came back with the lowest quote.

A product that meets the right certification for a warehouse may be entirely inadequate in a chemical processing facility or on a roof.

Work at Heights Wednesday: Is the company training your team actually accredited for the unit standards they are delivering?

A certificate from an unaccredited provider has no legal standing, and it happens more often than most safety managers realise.

Before booking any work at heights training, verify that your provider is registered with the Institute for Work at Heights (IWH).
The IWH is a SAQA-registered professional body, and IWH registration automatically confirms SETA accreditation, making it the most reliable way to check.

Beyond accreditation, the training itself needs to include a practical component because work at heights is a practical task.

Facilitators must be qualified to both train and assess, and enough time must be set aside to cover the content properly.

A 2-credit unit standard typically takes 1 to 2 days, and a combined 5-credit programme can take up to 3 days.

Things that should make you question a training provider:

Significantly faster training sessions than the suggested unit standard time
Not using the full array of fall arrest equipment during training
Not being physically required to climb
The training price seems too good to be true

Does the job really call for a hard hat?

There are work environments where the main risk is bumping your head against a fixed object, rather than being struck by a falling object.

Think warehouses, maintenance areas, low clearance spaces and busy facilities where head protection is needed throughout the day.

Work at Heights Wednesday: Most fall protection conversations focus on the harness. The harness is only one part of a four-component system.

The ABCs of fall protection break down what a complete system actually looks like on site.

Anchor Point. This is the primary connecting point that takes the greatest force in the event of a fall. An anchor that has not been load-rated or verified for fall arrest is not a safe anchor, regardless of how solid it looks.

Body Support. The harness keeps the body supported and upright when a fall is arrested. It must fit correctly, be inspected before each use, and be suited to the specific task being performed. A harness worn incorrectly provides significantly less protection than its rating suggests.

Connector. The connector links the harness to the anchor. The type of connector, whether a lanyard, energy-absorbing lanyard, or SRL, determines the arrest force applied to the body and the fall distance. Selecting the wrong connector for the environment is one of the most common errors on site.

Descent and Rescue. This covers both controlled descent into confined spaces and the equipment and procedures needed to recover a suspended worker after a fall arrest. A system without a rescue plan attached to it is incomplete, and suspension trauma means time is critical once a fall has occurred.

Education. Everyone working at height must hold certified training specific to the tasks they are performing. In South Africa, that means training aligned to the relevant unit standards. A generic certificate does not cover every task.

Electra Mining Africa 2026 is done, and it was a fantastic week.

Five days at the expo gave our team the opportunity to connect with safety officers, site managers, engineers, and procurement professionals from across the industry.

We ran live fall protection demonstrations every day, including the 100kg drop test comparing arrest forces across a shock-absorbing lanyard, rope, and SRL, the dropping tools demonstration showing real impact from 10 metres, and the unconscious rescue demonstration that consistently drew the biggest crowd.

Work at Heights Wednesday: Working at heights starts with proper preparation.

Before a task begins, the risks need to be understood, the team needs the right training, and the equipment needs to be suitable for the job.

Three important things to check before starting work at height:

1. Fall Protection Plan
Have a site and task specific plan in place that identifies the risks and outlines how the work should be carried out safely.

2. Training
Make sure everyone involved has the appropriate working at heights training for the task they will be performing.

3. Equipment
Use certified equipment that is suitable for the specific task, environment and fall protection system.

Taking the time to get these three areas right can make a significant difference to safety on site.
