Building coastal resilience starts with understanding the shoreline.

Matthew Pittsley from our team was recently at Popham Beach collecting aerial photos and video of existing conditions to support the design and permitting of a shoreline stabilization project. The imagery helps our team evaluate site conditions and develop solutions that strengthen and protect Maine's coastline.

Four members of the Walsh Engineering Associates team participated in last week's ACEC golf tournament, enjoying some friendly competition and time with fellow engineering professionals.

We always appreciate opportunities to connect with colleagues, strengthen relationships, and represent WEA in the engineering community. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a great event!

👏 Milestone Reached at Cape Arundel Golf Club! 👏

The shoreline stabilization phase of the project along the Kennebunk River is officially complete!
✔️ 2,500+ feet of shoreline stabilized
✔️ 18,900 tons of protective stone placed
✔️ 1+ mile of temporary access roads constructed
✔️ Parking lot improvements completed

This work helps protect the course from erosion and rising sea levels, while preserving its playability, beauty, and historic character.

🌿 Next up: native buffer restoration and invasive species removal

Huge thanks to capearundelgolfclub, Foglio, Inc., and the entire project team for the collaboration and shared commitment to coastal resilience and environmental stewardship.

Project Complete: Scarborough Sand Dune Restoration 🌊
Following the January 2024 storms, three neighboring properties came together with WEA to rebuild stronger and smarter.
✅ Removed damaged wooden seawalls
✅ Restored the dune system with sand, cobble core & over 12,000 dune grass plugs
✅ Added riprap for long-term shoreline protection
✅ Built up to flood elevation for future resilience
The result? A more natural, durable, and resilient coastline.

Exciting progress at the Cape Arundel Golf Club!
Construction began earlier this fall on a comprehensive shoreline stabilization project along the Kennebunk River. The work includes:
✅ ~2,500 linear feet of hybrid (green/gray) shoreline stabilization measures
✅ Over 2.6 acres of invasive species removal
✅ More than 3.5 acres of native buffer restoration
These efforts will help protect the riverbank, enhance wildlife habitat, and improve long-term resilience for the Cape Arundel Gold Club, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

We are proud to be part of a project that combines engineering, ecological restoration, and historic site preservation for lasting impact in Kennebunkport, Maine.
