The damage Storm Amy inflicted on farms throughout the western coasts of Europe is a reminder of why we design Ocean structures for the extremes. This time two years ago we were finishing up a small IMTA (seaweed and oysters) farm design project with Open Climate Solutions and the Kilchoan Melfort Trust in Scotland. During its second season we got this awesome feedback from that client after the farm weathered Storm Eowyn (AY-oh-win).

Great job by Nate Baker on this project, working with Bojan Martin, Daniel Prost, Mátyás Csiky, and Marnik Van Cauter (and some special appearances by Adrian Macleod!) And we're excited for when we can share about our next collaboration with OCS on what will be one of the most exposed aquaculture farm sites in the world! Stay tuned.

rather than individually recapping the rest of the papers from the ICES Working Group on Open-Ocean Aquaculture's Frontiers Special Issue, "Differentiating and defining ‘exposed’ and ‘offshore’ aquaculture and implications for aquaculture operation, management, costs, and policy", I put it in a podcast. Well, NotebookLM did, because I asked it to 🙄
But I was impressed! It's actually fun to listen to.

What it got right:
*Sounding human! (Including getting things wrong occasionally while I cringe at hearing my research enthusiastically misrepresented)
*Good analogies to make concepts accessible.
*Summarizing background and technical findings (mostly)
*Mind maps--awesome! (Separate from the podcast. Overlaid with the podcast audio below).

What it got wrong:
*Specifics: We're not saying to get rid of the term offshore! We're saying that "offshore" (distance from shore) is not the same as "exposed" (high energy).
*General: Exaggeration (Note: The video version was even worse at this. E.g. "The central engineering challenge of our time...")
*Understanding how several (5) papers that I gave it related to each other.

Novel:
*When I proposed the Specific Exposure Energy index, I never thought of pronouncing it "Sea". 🤷

Are other people using NotebookLM in the research world? How? And what have you found to work (and not work)?
I'm also really curious to hear your feedback on this summary if you listen to it!

Kelson naval architect Douglas Slocum represented Kelson at the 2025 TEAMER's Numerical Modeling, Expertise and Commercialization Facility Summit. As a TEAMER facility, we have a unique opportunity to support wave and tidal energy clients around the world with Site Characterization and Extreme Value Analysis, Numerical Modeling & Analysis, and design and system integration Expertise.

Themes and takeaways from this year's summit included:

-Access to data, usability of data submitted to MHKDR -Interfaces between IEC standards and classification societies
-Strategy and commercialization support expanding alongside technical support -Expanding multi-facility collaborations*
