As you hit the road to celebrate the unofficial end of Summer, remember to do your part to keep everyone on the road safe, including road work crews.
Here are a few tips to keep your holiday weekend commute safe:
- SLOW DOWN
It’s a common misconception that most fatalities happen to work crews, when statistics show that drivers and passengers make up 80% of work zone fatalities. Speeding through a work zone gives you less time to react to lane shifts or closures, increasing risk for you and other drivers.
- STAY ALERT
Safe driving is more than just driving a safe speed; it’s about staying focused. This means you should stay well rested, hydrated and alert when you’re behind the wheel. Always maintain awareness of road workers, traffic control devices, such as arrow boards, and flaggers directing traffic.
- PLAN AHEAD
From checking the weather, to navigation, and managing playlists, every step planned stops distracted driving later. Be prepared for what you can control, such as entertainment and car organization, as well as things out of your control, like road closures and weather emergencies.
- STAY INFORMED
Stay up-to-date about work zone safety through free programs provided at a state or national level. Some states provide their own work zone courses, such as the Pennsylvania New Driver Work Zone Safety Program.
- KEEP CALM
Finally, being patient on the road helps keep everyone safer. Staying calm while driving through work zones allows drivers to merge early and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
