Some stuff we’ve worked on the last couple of weeks. We unfortanately had to retire from daily service our Gates Omni Crimper from the early 90’s due to a crimping issue and unavailable parts. One day we may find the parts to fix it, but she got replaced with a brand used Gates GC32-XD and has already made many hoses and working great!

Customer told us today he spent $585 at the big-name truck dealer for two AC hoses. He brought them to our shop for a quote.

Our price? $205 after tax. 🤑

Needless to say, we made them so he could return the dealer’s hoses. 💪🏼

In honor of saving him over $300, here’s an AC photo dump showcasing some of the crazy things we do. We can reuse hose ends, swap one end from one hose to another, replace or add ports, and braze both aluminum and steel. We honestly can’t remember the last time we had to turn away an AC hose— we always find a way to fix it.

Here are some fun facts about AC hoses. 🤓👇🏻

On most cars and trucks, you have a high side and a low side.

• The high side operates at higher pressure and uses a smaller diameter hose.
• The low side operates at lower pressure and uses a larger diameter hose.

Most vehicles use -6 or -8 hose on the high-pressure side and -10 or -12 on the low-pressure return side. Because of that, most fittings with service ports are standardized—you can typically only get low-side ports on -10 and -12 fittings and high-side ports on -6 and -8 fittings.

Now here’s where things get interesting…

On school buses, fire trucks, and ambulances, you’ll often find -10 and -12 hose used on the high side, and -12 (and occasionally even -16) on the low side. When that happens, you have to get creative because every A/C system still needs both a high-side and a low-side service port to charge and service the system.

That’s where we come in.

We build countless AC hoses for Chesterfield County, the City of Richmond, and Atlantic Emergency Solutions, which services many of the fire trucks and ambulances throughout Central Virginia. Many of those hoses require us to modify the fittings to accept the correct service ports. We’ll drill the fittings, braze in the proper port, and often add sensor ports as well.

It’s not something you’ll find at the dealership, and it’s one of the many reasons we’re able to save our customers money while getting them back on the road.

So the next time you need an AC hose, skip the dealer and come see us. We’ll build it while you wait, customize it if needed, and usually do it for a fraction of the dealership price. 🤗
