The scary part isn't the crane. 🎃

It's the load chart nobody checked. The ground nobody tested. The sling that was "probably fine."

Every one of those is a decision someone made in a hurry, and none of them announce themselves until it's too late to undo.

So we keep the surprises where they belong, at the end of October.

Happy Halloween from all of us at Bass Crane Service. Watch out for the little ones tonight, and if you're working, stay safe out there.

That's a military helicopter on the end of a 100-ton crane. 🚁

Rotor head rigged on synthetic slings, picked clean, set down without a mark on it.

The interesting part isn't the aircraft, it's that nothing happened. Slings sized off the real weight, the load chart checked before the outriggers came down, and an operator who has done this long enough to make it look dull.

Boring is the goal. Boring is how everybody gets home.

Lane closures are not the hard part. Giving them back on time is.

Night work on a highway runs on a window somebody negotiated weeks earlier. Traffic control goes up, the lanes come down, and from that moment everything is measured against one deadline that does not move: the road has to be open before the morning commute.

So the planning happens long before dark. Where the outriggers land. How far the boom has to reach from a shoulder that is narrower than it looks on a drawing. What happens if the piece does not come free on the first try. Which lights go where, so every person on the ground stays visible to every other person for the whole shift.

By sunrise there should be nothing to see. No cones, no crane, no sign that anyone was there.

That is what a well-run night looks like and it is almost entirely decided before the first truck arrives.

The right machine matters more than the biggest one.

A pick that needs a 40-ton crane does not go better with a 160-ton crane. It goes slower, costs more, and takes up half your site.

Too small and you are re-rigging, or making a second trip. Too big and you are paying for capacity you cannot use, on a site that may not have room for it in the first place.

The questions that settle it are simple: how heavy, how high, and how close can we get. Answer those three and the right machine picks itself.

We work within about 50 miles of Richmond which puts Fredericksburg and Charlottesville comfortably in range.

Not sure what your lift needs? That's the call to make. We'll tell you straight.

Most of Richmond was asleep for this one.

Overhead sign structures come down at night for one reason: that's when the lanes are available. Which means the whole job runs against a clock, traffic control set, crane in position, rigging checked, the old structure off and the new one set, all inside a window that closes whether you are finished or not.

It also means working by floodlight on a shoulder with a 160-ton machine, where every person on the ground has to stay visible to every other person for the entire shift.

By the time traffic came through in the morning, there was nothing to see. That's the job done right.

Route 360, overnight. Virginia infrastructure, maintained by people most drivers will never meet.

It's Manufacturing Month, so here's the part of manufacturing nobody photographs for the brochure.

Plants run on equipment that eventually has to be replaced. Compressors, chillers, presses, dust collectors, transformers. Every one of them arrives too heavy to roll in through a door, and most of them have to be set in a space that was designed around the machine that is already there.

That is the job here, a 100-ton crane, an industrial compressor, and a lift planned around the access the site actually had rather than the access anyone wished for.

Plant managers tend to call a crane company late, once the equipment is already on a truck. Earlier is better. If the piece is ordered and the delivery date is set, that is the right moment to talk about how it gets off the truck and onto the pad.

Nobody is born knowing how to read a load chart.

Construction Inclusion Week starts today, and it runs through Friday. It lands in the middle of Careers in Construction Month, and on a job site the two come down to the same thing: somebody has to be willing to teach, and somebody has to be made welcome enough to stay long enough to learn.

Setting up a machine this size on a quarry floor is not something you work out from a manual. Where the outriggers can safely land, what the ground under the gravel is actually doing, when to stop and reset instead of pushing on, that gets handed over, one person to the next, until it belongs to you.

Every operator and rigger here learned it from someone who went first. Equipment can be bought. This part has to be passed down.

If you are weighing up the trades, ask somebody already doing the work. Most of us are glad to be asked.

Q4 is the tightest quarter on a crane calendar.

Steel goes up before the frost. Rooftop units get set before winter shuts the roof down. Quarries push to close out the year. Everyone needs the same window, and the good dates go first.

If you have a lift coming between now and the end of December, the cheapest thing you can do is call early. Booking ahead means you get the crane that fits the pick instead of the one that happens to be open and it gives us time to walk the site, check access, and plan the rigging properly.

No obligation. Tell us what you're setting and we'll tell you what it takes.

Today's for the crews. 🇺🇸

The operators, riggers, drivers and mechanics who make the lifts look easy — and who've been doing it here in Richmond for three generations.

No pick happens without them.
