In 1928, a period of rapid growth marked a defining moment in FMC’s early history.

That year, stock for the newly renamed John Bean Manufacturing Company was introduced on the San Francisco Exchange. Soon after, the acquisitions of Anderson‑Barngrover Co. and Sprague‑Sells expanded the company’s capabilities and established it as the world’s largest food machinery manufacturer.

As the company’s reach continued to grow, leaders looked for a name that reflected its expanding vision. A contest was held, and the winning entry—Food Machinery Corporation—captured the scale and ambition of what the business had become.

Nearly a century later, FMC continues to build on that foundation—evolving, adapting, and advancing science‑based innovations that help support agriculture around the world.

Follow along as we share more moments from FMC’s history and the innovations that shaped who we are today.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a reminder that taking care of ourselves goes beyond physical health.

Small moments matter more than we think. A midday pause to check in with yourself. A lunch shared with a colleague. These simple actions can make a real difference in how we feel and how we show up for one another.

At FMC, safety is one of our core values, and thinking and acting safely includes both physical and mental health. We encourage everyone to pause, think safe, and utilize the resources available to support their wellbeing.

FMC joins in mourning the loss of Dirk Kempthorne, who served on our board of directors for more than 15 years. During his tenure, he played an important role in helping guide FMC’s transformation from a diversified specialty chemical company to our current focus on agriculture.

We honor Dirk’s life and legacy and are grateful for his leadership, service and the lasting impact he made on our board, our leadership and our company. He will be deeply missed.

This Earth Day, our employees in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are demonstrating our commitment to the environment by rolling up their sleeves with Schuylkill River Development Corporation (SRDC) to maintain the Schuylkill Banks – an 8-mile trail along the Schuylkill River that connects the city’s neighborhoods and provides space for safe recreation, transportation and community.

Through hands‑on work like landscaping, clearing pathways and preparing the riverfront for spring growth, our volunteers are helping protect the natural ecosystems that support our city and our communities. There’s no better way to give back on Earth Day than to work along the banks of the river that flows right outside our doors.

In 1901, inventor and entrepreneur John Bean introduced a breakthrough that would help shape the future of modern agriculture: the “Magic Pump.”

Designed to deliver a more consistent and effective spray, Bean’s innovation improved how growers protected their crops at a time when reliable application technology was still in its infancy. That entrepreneurial approach to problem solving and practical innovation laid the groundwork for what would eventually become FMC.

More than a century later, FMC continues to build on that legacy—advancing science-based solutions that help growers around the world protect crops and improve productivity.

Follow along as we share more moments from FMC’s history and the innovations that shaped who we are today.
