The “Oat Mafia” isn’t some underground operation betting on oat seeds, though one farmer, Martin Larsen, literally went underground to track nitrate pollution in drinking water caused by decades of corn and soybean farming. The solution to nitrate pollution? Oats.

Now, 130 Midwest farmers are backing a new oat mill in Albert Lea, Minnesota, hoping to create demand for a crop that can improve soil health, reduce fertilizer runoff, and make farming more sustainable. They’re not replacing corn and soybeans, just adding oats back into the rotation.

Thank you Minnesota Soil Health Coalition and Green Cover Seed for sharing information on crop yields with interseeded cover crops.

It is an investment to get new cover crop equipment and seeds and it's good to see that the results are positive for farmers in regards to soil health and depending on row spacing choices, virtually no difference in yields.
