Have a weekly that is recorded in 24,000khz @ 64kbps. Several steps to get it at a stream friendly 44,100 @ 192
Original file is hot, so reduced to get some headroom
Used a compression pre set to level it all out
Then a hard limit (+2db) to raise it up to broadcast level.

I baked the vox on ZipCodeZero because of too much gain on the board. So to unbake it I had to apply a noise reduction setting and then remove some low end to get it a little cleaner. Doing the voice overs for the the other stations was challenge. Lesson learned.

When I edit Monday's show, I try and get it to @3 seconds over to allow for the squish. Usually takes 3 or 4 trips acros...

Using NextKast (broadcasting software) sometimes produces some unwanted noise when I'm on the mic if the file is processed with my compression setting. Usually right around 1k. It's subtle but noticeable if you are listening thru the headphones. So to fix that I used a neat little tool in Audition that acts like a gate for the noise floor. Leaves the quiet parts clean without affecting the recording. This is the preset I made just for this purpose.

Even with commute time, still managed to get everything done before noon. Really digging the new workstation!

Got up super dooper early to get started on the typical Tuesday morning workload. Really focused on mic technique while inserting voice overs for branding ZipCodeZero. The biggest challenge is to make it natural sounding as possible BEFORE adding compression. That includes matching the inflection to blend into existing vocal.

Finished Tuesdays tasks in record time!
A few thoughts...
Being involved with the whole independent/DIY music community, music submitted for airplay presents some unique challenges. First and foremost, recording quality. Many submissions don't get accepted because of things like baking the high end (3k is the biggest offender) and balanced levels thru out the recording. I have gotten more than a few tracks where the kick drum will go from too far in front of the mix to disappearing completely. I have to say however, a majority of DIY recordings are studio quality and nicely packaged.

Another stacked morning! Besides editing/branding ZipCodeZero, producing/branding news and weather, a .cue (playlist w/track time) file had to be manually created because of operator error. A little time consuming but everything was done and distributed before noon. Whew! how 'bout another pot 'o coffee?
