By the time a project reaches detailed engineering, major equipment has often been selected, procurement timelines are active, and design changes become significantly more expensive to correct.

Smith & Burgess reviews detailed engineering packages to identify issues that can affect relief system performance, flare network capacity, and compliance documentation before those issues carry into construction and commissioning.

Our team reviews updated load cases, utility assumptions, equipment revisions, and system interactions to confirm that late-stage design changes remain technically consistent with the intended operating basis.

This level of review is particularly valuable on projects where multiple contractors, revisions, and design updates have occurred across the project lifecycle.

Over time, facility modifications can affect the assumptions and safeguards evaluated in previous PHAs.

Procedures evolve. Equipment is modified. Operating conditions change. As units evolve, earlier analyses may no longer reflect current facility configuration or operation.

Smith & Burgess facilitates PHAs and revalidations using current operating data, updated process safety information, and field verification to reassess credible scenarios and process risk.

The resulting study reflects current operating conditions, existing protection layers, and present-day facility configuration.

Smith & Burgess is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to architect, build, and guide enterprise software solutions that drive operational excellence and enterprise visibility. This role is ideal for a seasoned engineer who excels at designing scalable systems, managing technical complexity, and leading teams through evolution, not unnecessary rewrites.

As part of a company dedicated to making the oil & gas industry safer, you’ll work on impactful internal platforms, automation, and data-driven solutions that support global operations.

In this role, you will:
• Set technology and architecture direction aligned to performance, reliability, scalability, and maintainability goals
• Design, document, and communicate system architecture and technical standards
• Build and implement critical or highly complex components
• Develop frameworks and proof-of-concept solutions
• Modernize and extend legacy systems pragmatically
• Design and optimize pipelines, automation, and deployment workflows
• Architect reporting, data pipelines, and BI solutions
• Mentor and guide developers on design patterns and architectural intent
• Partner cross-functionally to deliver business critical solutions

What we’re looking for:
• Strong abstraction and system design skills
• Experience improving legacy systems while maintaining business continuity
• Ability to communicate architecture clearly and guide teams within it
• Comfort managing complexity in cloud environments
• Experience with distributed systems, web technologies, or cloud-based architectures is a strong plus.

Required Experience and Skills:
• 5–10+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Proven enterprise architecture and delivery experience
• Languages: C #, Java, JavaScript, SQL,
• Frameworks/Tools: .NET, Node.js, Angular, Dapper and/or EF

Incident investigations are most effective when they identify the technical and operational factors that allowed the event to occur.

Pressure relief system performance, safeguarding assumptions, operating procedures, and equipment configuration can all influence incident progression and system response.

Smith & Burgess supports incident investigations by evaluating relief and flare system behavior, reviewing process safety information, and assessing whether existing safeguards performed as intended under actual operating conditions.

The findings help facilities address root causes, strengthen protection strategies, and support future operating reliability.

Relief and flare studies often identify issues that are not apparent during normal operation.

Simultaneous relief scenarios, utility failures, and changes in operating rates can significantly alter how relief loads interact across a flare system.

Smith & Burgess performs integrated relief and flare studies to evaluate these scenarios, assess system response, and identify conditions that may exceed original design assumptions.

Engineering design reviews help confirm that new projects align with existing relief and flare system requirements before changes move into ex*****on.

Tie-ins, operating changes, and equipment modifications can affect relief loads, disposal system hydraulics, and safeguarding assumptions across a facility.

We help project teams evaluate these impacts early—supporting alignment between design intent, current operations, and process safety requirements.

Oversized spring-loaded v***r relief valves are frequently identified as a concern during relief system reviews, but oversized does not always mean unstable.

In this paper, examines why v***r relief valve installations should be evaluated based on credible scenarios, operating behavior, and evidence of instability-related damage—not size ratio alone.

The paper also discusses the distinction between chatter concerns and flow-induced instability, along with considerations tied to API 521 guidance and v***r service applications.
