Written by John W. Kopec and published by the Acoustical Society of America in 1997, the book follows three Harvard-trained physicists named Sabine. Their work at Riverbank spanned nearly three quarters of the twentieth century.

Wallace Clement Sabine, the father of the science of architectural acoustics, designed the Riverbank laboratory on Colonel George Fabyan's estate in Geneva, Illinois. It was finished just months before his death in 1919. Paul E. Sabine then led Riverbank through its formative years and was involved in founding the Acoustical Society of America. His son, Hale Johnson Sabine, carried that work forward in the 1950s and 1960s.

As Kopec writes, "That one family could have accomplished so much in one particular science is overwhelming."
