A complimentary inspection performed by an honest shop serves a genuinely useful function — it gives the technician a complete picture of the vehicle's condition beyond the specific complaint the customer came in for. A brake customer whose inspection reveals a coolant leak they did not know about has been given valuable information they needed, regardless of whether they choose to address it that day. The inspection itself costs the customer nothing and the information it produces is real. Where this practice earns its bad reputation is at shops that use inspections to generate inflated or unnecessary recommendations — flagging items as urgent that are not, or recommending services on healthy components to increase the repair order. The difference between a trustworthy inspection and a sales tactic is transparency — a good shop shows the customer what was found, explains why it matters, and leaves the decision entirely with the customer without pressure.
