September is Bourbon Heritage Month, which seems like an excellent reason to take the bar somewhere more interesting.

The Gerstner 1403 Aficionado Travel Bar transforms a favorite bottle and the tools of a proper pour into a handsome, portable experience. It is equally at home beside a campfire, at a tailgate, or waiting in the study for friends to arrive.

Handcrafted in Dayton, Ohio, it proves that happy hour does not need a permanent address. Learn more at GerstnerUSA.com.

Some projects carry a significance that reaches far beyond the workshop.

H. Gerstner & Sons is honored to have been selected to manufacture presentation boxes for the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

For 120 years, our craftspeople have built wooden chests and cases in Dayton, Ohio, with an unwavering commitment to precision, quality, and American workmanship. To have that tradition become part of the presentation of such an important national honor is a responsibility we accept with tremendous pride.

Whether you are organizing precision tools for the machine shop or keeping your home garage in order, the Gerstner International brings order to the controlled chaos of any shop space.

Its felt-lined drawers help protect tools, instruments, and collectibles, while the hidden locking system keeps the chest’s profile clean and uncluttered. Finished in Dark Oak with polished chrome hardware, it looks right at home on the bench, in the shop, or in the garage.

The end of August is a good time to reset the workshop and prepare for fall.

Return tools to their drawers. Sort the supplies gathered over the summer. Clear the workbench. Make room for cooler-weather projects, holiday builds, hunting and fishing gear, and the hobbies that tend to move indoors as the days grow shorter.

A well-organized Gerstner keeps everything ready for the season ahead, including the tape measure that was probably sitting six inches from where you last looked.

September is coming. Start fall with a clean bench, organized tools, and room for the next project.

Summer projects eventually become fall projects. Fall projects have a suspicious habit of becoming winter projects.

A Gerstner will be ready whenever you finish.

The gift that lasts longer than summer is not built around a season. It is built around the work, hobbies, collections, and family stories that continue year after year.

Summer may be ending. The next project is just getting started.

The entire team is excited to be a part of the team building the case for the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a big thank you to Congressman Mike Turner and WHIO for coming by to share the news!

A local wooden chest manufacturer will play a role in creating the 2026 Presidential Medal of Freedom cases.

For 120 years, H. Gerstner & Sons has been building more than wooden chests. We have been preserving a tradition of American craftsmanship that began in Dayton, Ohio, in 1906.

Earlier this year, Kim Brown joined Living Dayton to share more about the Gerstner story, from the company’s early days to the craftspeople who continue building our chests today.

It was an opportunity to reflect on what 120 years really means: generations of skilled hands, loyal customers, evolving collections, and a commitment to making products designed to remain useful for decades.

We are proud to celebrate this milestone in the city where it all began.

Some gifts are enjoyed for a season. Others become part of a lifetime.

For Dad, it might become the home for fishing tackle, pocketknives, watches, or the tools he reaches for every weekend.

For a recent graduate, it might hold the instruments of a new trade, the start of a collection, or the supplies behind a growing creative business.

Our imported Gerstner International collection is designed in the USA, manufactured to our specifications, and inspected by our team upon arrival, creating thoughtfully designed storage for the tools and collections that matter most.

Because the best gifts don't end with the occasion. They become part of someone's everyday life.

Route 66 turns 100 this year, while the roadside giants might not have ever held a Gerstner (nothing a little Photoshop can’t fix), our tool chests have played a big role along the Mother Road.

If you drive down Route 66, there are the remnants of the America that built, repaired, painted, welded, machined, and maintained nearly everything as travelers and dreamers made their way west.

You would likely find a Gerstner in service stations. Machine shops. Dealerships. Factories. Farm garages. Independent stores with hand-painted signs and owners who knew every customer by name.

The road has changed, but the American workshop is still worth preserving.

So are the tools, skills, and stories found inside it.

In 1913, the Great Dayton Flood destroyed Gerstner’s early company records.

The business continued.

Through economic upheaval, world wars, changing technology, and countless competitors, Gerstner remained committed to building wooden chests for people who cared deeply about their tools and their work.

A 120-year history is not created by avoiding hard years. It is created by building through them.
