Sometimes the best engineering tool in the office isn't on the screen.
Today's stormwater models can simulate storm events with tens of thousands of inputs in minutes. That power is essential to our work, but a results table full of stages and flows doesn't always show the "why" behind a design.
So every now and then, we step away from the monitors and pick up a marker.
There's no formula that hands you the optimal control structure for a pond. There are many design constraints and considerations, and the weir geometry affects each one differently. The model can check a design, but it can't tell you where to start, or what to do next. That comes from understanding the concept well enough to see it in your head before you ever run the numbers.
Drawing it out by hand slows us down in the best way. It helps our younger engineers build real intuition, helps us explain designs to clients and reviewers, and helps us eliminate unnecessary cost through a more effective design.
The software does the math. The whiteboard builds the understanding.
