As I sat here today at Epiphany Catholic church in Lake City, FL praying for our community, I wanted to share a positive story that may give you a little bit of hope and light at the end of this tunnel. In 1992, my family survived the devasting storm of Hurricane Andrew. It was 2 days before my 14th birthday, and honestly, I did not really understand the events that were about to unfold that would shape my future forever.
We lost most everything. Our family relocated down to the keys where we were able to rebuild the life we lost in Homestead and make lifelong friends and a new home. There I met my husband who would give me the sweetest most beautiful children.
While at the time, I could not see a positive future, the storm brought a cleansing to our lives and almost a rebirth. Neighbors helped neighbors, building code changed and the town was eventually rebuilt, better than it was before. Without Hurricane Andrew, I would never have met my husband, my dad would never have met my stepmom, and my current life today would not exist.
Do not fret over material things but instead be thankful for the people in your lives and the future to come. The storm might take my home, but it will not take my peace. Please adhere to evacuation orders and stay safe. Our community is going to need every last able-bodied person to rebuild. I will be back as soon as the roads allow us to help with rebuilding our homes and businesses. Please reach out after the storm for structural assessments and drawings needed for permitting. In the meantime, today is my daughter's 15th birthday and we'll be celebrating her birth and praying for our community. See you on the other side!
