Last week, Wells team members joined students at Iowa State University - Department of Architecture to judge their 4th-year urban design studio competition. The studio challenged students to reimagine Dry Dock 1 at the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, a site rich in industrial history and ripe for community transformation, using prefabricated building systems as both a design tool and a cultural medium.

Six teams presented their visions, judged on design concept, fabrication process, research quality, and alignment with the studio brief. Two teams were selected to receive the Wells Scholarship:
🔹Seemron Rana for "Casting the Void," an exploration of how prefabricated concrete texture and form can redefine the site as a place of restoration and fabrication.
🔹Carmen Araiza Solorio, Sebastian Salamanca, and Evan Reincke for "War Veil," a program for reinvigorating the site's industrial legacy through a modular manufacturing facility designed to support affordable housing.

Congratulations to both teams, and to all who presented. We look forward to seeing these designers turn bold ideas into inspiring realities.

This semester, Wells partnered with Georgia Tech School of Architecture and HKS Architects to support a studio unlike any other. Students tackled a real site in Detroit, Michigan, designing individual building proposals rooted in prefabricated building systems, and exploring how material, texture, and surface can tell an architectural story. When it was time to make those ideas physical, our team poured UHPC so students could hold their own work in their hands.

That kind of investment matters. Shout out to our team members whose leadership and sustained engagement made this possible, to our partners at HKS, Alexander Briseno, Chuk Lindberg, and SoMin Park for the mentorship and care they brought to every stage, and to Julie Ju-Youn Kim, William H. Harrison Professor and Chair of the Georgia Tech School of Architecture, for bringing us into something truly special.

Today, that work is on display at the Georgia Tech School of Architecture End of Year Show. We are excited to see what this next generation of designers has in store.
