In a recent article published by Curb Cuts, journalist Steven Aquino shares Terry Knight’s inspiring story and explores how assistive technology can make a meaningful difference in people's everyday lives.

As his hand strength gradually declined, activities that once came naturally became increasingly difficult, from writing and holding tools to enjoying his hobbies.

With the help of Carbonhand, Terry has been able to regain the ability to perform many of these activities independently.

“I love the device! It has given me back a significant degree of freedom, independence, and dignity in carrying out daily tasks without always needing to ask for help.”

We are proud to see Carbonhand featured in a new article from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The article highlights Army Veteran Terry Knight, a former combat medic living with ALS, and how impaired hand function had made many everyday activities increasingly difficult.

With Carbonhand, Terry has been able to regain function and independence in his daily life.

“Before, if I was going to grab a bottle, I’d have to help push it into my hand and then put my finger under it,” he recalled. “Now, I’m back to using one hand.”

Today, Carbonhand has been provided to 100 Veterans across more than 40 VA Medical Centers in the United States, supporting Veterans with impaired hand function caused by conditions such as , , , and orthopedic injuries.

We are grateful to the VA clinicians and occupational therapists who work every day to help Veterans regain independence and participate more fully in the activities that matter to them.

Meet Andreas Guba from Letzlingen, Germany.

Andreas suffered a spinal cord stroke 16 years ago, affecting his ability to walk and his hand function.

Hand function plays an important role in many of the activities we do every day, and even small improvements can make a meaningful difference in daily life.

For Andreas, one moment stood out in particular:

“My first wow moment was when I was able to write again after 16 years.”

Today, Carbonhand supports Andreas in different activities in his daily life, helping him use his hand for tasks that would otherwise be difficult, such as, holding cutlery, picking up a cup and working on projects in his workshop.

On World Myositis Day, we want to recognize the strength, determination, and resilience of everyone living with myositis.

When muscle weakness affects the hands, everyday moments that many of us take for granted, preparing a meal, holding a cup, carrying a bag, using a tool, or enjoying a favourite hobby, can become difficult or even impossible.

That is why it means so much to us to see how Carbonhand® has helped people living with myositis regain the ability to do more for themselves, take part in activities that matter to them, and experience greater independence in everyday life.

Sometimes, a stronger grip can mean much more than simply holding an object. It can mean freedom. Confidence. Participation. And the ability to keep doing the things that make everyday life meaningful.

We have reached an important milestone in the United States: 100 U.S. military veterans have now been fitted with Carbonhand® through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system.

Reaching 100 veterans served reflects the success and sustained daily use by patients across the country. One example, Terry Knight, a U.S. Army veteran based in Western Washington, struggled with mobility in his right hand until he began using the Carbonhand. The device has since allowed him to return to daily tasks.

From growing up on Whidbey Island to serving as a combat medic in Iraq, Terry dedicated his life to helping others in some of the most challenging environments. But after returning home, his life took an unexpected turn with a diagnosis of ALS—one that would change everything. Faced with physical and emotional challenges, Terry chose not to give up. Instead, he focused on staying active, present, and connected to the people and purpose that matter most. As ALS progressed and everyday tasks became more difficult, he searched for new ways to maintain his independence. That search led him to Carbonhand—an assistive glove that helped him regain grip strength and control. What may seem like small moments, like holding a water bottle or playing pickleball, became powerful milestones on his journey back to independence. But this story is about more than technology. It’s about mindset, support, and the determination to keep moving forward. With the help of his family, his community, and a willingness to try new solutions, Terry continues to live life on his own terms.
