An electrical distribution board can look perfectly normal while a connection inside is overheating. That is why we believe basic thermal imaging should form part of every electrical distribution inspection, wherever safe access and suitable operating conditions allow.

A thermal scan under representative load can reveal unusual heating associated with poor connections, overloaded conductors or deteriorating components—sometimes before visible damage develops. It also helps identify where further investigation should focus.The benefits are practical:

✅ Earlier identification of developing problems.
✅ Clearer evidence to support maintenance recommendations.
✅ Recorded images for comparison during future inspections.

However, taking a thermal image is only the beginning.

Results need competent interpretation. Load, reflections, surface properties and normal equipment heating all affect what the camera shows. A hot spot needs investigation; its colour alone does not establish a fault.

Thermal imaging complements visual inspection and electrical testing. A cool board under light load cannot demonstrate how it will behave during peak demand.

Our view is simple: a basic thermal survey adds valuable information about an installation while it is operating. That deserves a routine place in the inspection process.

🔌 Charging your electric car at home? Safety matters as much as speed.

An EV can draw electricity continuously for several hours. A properly installed Type 2 wallbox provides a dedicated connection designed for this prolonged use.

Its Mode 3 charging system communicates with the vehicle, controls when charging power is switched on and tells the car how much current is available. Connector locking also helps prevent unplugging while charging.

✅ Secure connection and controlled charging
✅ Proper earthing, inspection and testing

Portable chargers also have safety features, but they still rely on the condition of the household socket and its wiring.

A quality wallbox is only part of the solution. The installation behind it must be safe too.

Distribution board upgrade for a Schneider EV charging installation, incorporating an iMNX undervoltage release alongside Type A-SI residual-current protection.

The iMNX adds a fail-safe disconnection function controlled by the charger’s safety circuit. If the internal contactor fails to open—for example, due to welded contacts—the charger can trigger the associated upstream protective device to disconnect the supply. This provides an additional means of disconnection when the charger’s normal switching mechanism fails.

Type A-SI protection detects sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC residual currents, with enhanced immunity to electrical disturbances to reduce unwanted tripping.

Together, these measures strengthen fault protection and improve charging reliability through coordinated protective-device selection.

🔍 These cables supplied a property for decades. A closer look shows why their condition matters.

These meter tails came from a single-phase 40 A supply in Malta. Under the microscope, the individual metal strands show deep indentations, flattened sections, sharp bends and some apparently cut or broken strands.

There are no apparent signs of arcing in this case. However, the overall condition of the terminations appears unsuitable for continued use.

⚠️ Why does a poor connection matter?

It can cause localised overheating, damage the insulation, create an intermittent supply and, if it deteriorates further, lead to arcing or fire. A poor connection can overheat even below 40 A, without drawing enough current to blow the fuse or trip the circuit breaker.

“It has worked for years” is no guarantee that it remains safe today.

Having electrical installations inspected periodically by a qualified professional can help identify deterioration before it becomes a serious problem.
