Great progress continues on the Thorpe Marsh 400 kV BESS project.

H&MV Engineering is delivering the project as Principal Designer and Principal Contractor, supporting developer Energy, backed by and the UK Government’s National Wealth Fund.

Following site mobilisation and formal handover, the project has now moved fully into the heavy civils phase, with full CDM control transferred to H&MV Engineering on 25 February 2025.

Key works currently underway include:

◾The civils team are continuing with drainage installation
◾Cable troughs and fencing works are nearing completion
◾A.I.S compound works are on-going with electrical fit-out commencing
◾National Grid User Bay works are advancing at pace
◾HV Grid Route duct installation complete, cable installation under way
◾Design development across civil, electrical and grid interfaces continues, nearing completion, with close coordination remains ongoing with NESO, National Grid, and Sungrow.

Health, safety and wellbeing remain at the forefront of this project, with over 130,000 H&MV hours worked with no recorded incidents as works progress across multiple fronts towards delivery on programme.

We’re proud to announce the successful completion of the Desert Bloom Storage Project in Maricopa County, Arizona.

With 600 MWh of standalone battery energy storage, Desert Bloom represents a significant milestone for Arizona’s energy infrastructure and is the state’s largest standalone energy storage facility.

The project has the capacity to store enough energy to supply the equivalent of 72,000 homes for up to four hours, while supporting the integration of renewable energy and helping strengthen grid reliability as energy demand continues to grow.

As Arizona progresses towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future, projects like Desert Bloom will play an important role in supporting the evolving energy landscape and delivering the infrastructure needed for a more sustainable grid.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the successful delivery of this project — from our dedicated field teams and project managers to our engineers and support teams. Your commitment to safety, quality and excellence was instrumental in bringing this project to completion.

Delivered by Cooke Power Services, part of the H&MV Engineering Group, Desert Bloom demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering critical energy infrastructure across the US through technical expertise, innovation and a safety-first approach.

Another important milestone for our teams in North America — and a project we’re proud to have delivered.

Coalburn 1 is a flagship energy infrastructure project that, upon full delivery, will become the largest operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility in Europe—marking a major milestone in Scotland’s renewable energy journey and strengthening the resilience of its clean power network.

The project demonstrates engineering excellence at scale, incorporating Scotland’s first precast transformer bund system and closed-loop earthworks, which eliminated the need to import structural fill. Delivered through an ESG-led approach, the project has also protected local wildlife, enhanced biodiversity, and reduced carbon emissions by thousands of tonnes.

With a capacity of 500 MW / 1,000 MWh, Coalburn 1 will enable the safe absorption of surplus renewable generation while providing critical stability and flexibility to a rapidly decarbonising electricity grid. In doing so, it directly supports Scotland’s net-zero ambitions, reduces constraint losses, and strengthens long-duration grid support at a pivotal moment in the energy transition.

Coalburn 1 stands out as a sector-defining development—combining engineering complexity, environmental responsibility, and large-scale innovation to deliver an energy asset of international significance.

On completion, it will become Europe’s largest grid-connected battery energy storage facility, positioning H&MV at the forefront of delivering the infrastructure that underpins the global transition to a resilient, low-carbon energy system.

H&MV Engineering has been awarded the Design & Build contract for Fidra Energy's 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐂 𝟓𝟎𝟎𝐌𝐖 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 (𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐒).

West Burton C is a strategically important 500MW (1GWh) battery storage project located in Nottinghamshire, adjacent to the existing West Burton B power station. The project forms part of Fidra's wider energy storage portfolio, supporting the UK's ambition for a decarbonised power system and strengthening energy security. This significant project marks another major milestone in our growing partnership with Fidra Energy and further reinforces our shared commitment to supporting the UK's energy transition.

This award builds on the successful relationship established through the Thorpe Marsh BESS project, one of the UK's largest battery storage developments at 1.45GW (2.9GWh). The continued confidence shown by Fidra in H&MV's capabilities is a testament to the strong collaboration, trust, and delivery focus demonstrated by both teams throughout our partnership. https://www.hmvengineering.com/hmv-engineering-appointed-to-deliver-uks-largest-battery-energy-storage-project-at-thorpe-marsh/

Adding to this success, Fidra recently announced that West Burton C reached financial close, securing £231 million of debt financing, alongside capital already committed by EIG and the National Wealth Fund, enabling the project to move into the construction phase.

We look forward to delivering another world-class energy storage project and contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy future for the UK.

H&MV Engineering is proud to confirm our appointment as principal designer and contractor for the delivery of the 400 kV grid connection and electrical infrastructure for the Thorpe Marsh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) – the largest of its kind in the UK and among the largest in Europe.
