Energy efficiency is now one of the biggest opportunities in food manufacturing.

For years, the focus has been on increasing output. Today, the challenge is increasing output without increasing energy consumption at the same rate.

Whether it's processing, chilling, cold storage, or blast freezing, energy remains one of the most significant operational costs on site.

When energy usage is high, it creates a ripple effect:
⚑ Higher operating costs
πŸ“‰ Increased pressure on margins
🌱 Greater ESG and sustainability pressures
🏭 More expensive production

Manufacturers now need to look beyond throughput alone. They need to ask:

πŸ€” How can we produce more while using less energy?

That's one of the challenges we set out to solve with VORTEX. Our next-generation portable blast freezer combines exceptional freezing performance with 10%+ energy savings compared to traditional blast freezer designs, helping manufacturers reduce energy consumption without compromising throughput or product quality.

πŸ‘‰ Freeze 20% faster
πŸ‘‰ Freeze 40% better
πŸ‘‰ Increase throughput
πŸ‘‰ Slash energy costs 10%+

Cold Chain Insight - The UK's cold storage network is busy.

Cold Chain Federation data shows chilled and frozen storage facilities averaged 80% utilisation between June 2024 and June 2025. Capacity typically rises further ahead of major seasonal events such as Christmas and Easter.

At first glance, that sounds efficient.

But for food manufacturers, high utilisation can leave little room for:

πŸ‘‰ Sudden increases in demand
πŸ‘‰ Seasonal production peaks
πŸ‘‰ New product launches
πŸ‘‰ Planned maintenance projects
πŸ‘‰ Equipment failures or unforeseen disruption

The UK began monitoring national cold storage capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic, when limited available storage space raised genuine concerns about food supply resilience.

That highlights an important distinction - capacity and resilience are not the same thing.

Permanent cold storage remains the backbone of food manufacturing operations. But when flexibility is required, portable cold stores and portable blast freezers can provide additional on-site capacity without the cost, delay, and commitment of permanent expansion.

Sometimes the most valuable storage space is the capacity you can deploy precisely when you need it.

❄️ Consistency at scale isn’t easy - but it is critical.

In high-volume , temperature variations across a pallet can impact product quality, increase waste, and erode margin.

That’s where comes in.

Our next generation blast freezer, VORTEX delivers up to 40% more consistent freezing across every pallet, giving processors and manufacturers, as well as cold chain companies greater control across every load.

βœ… Fewer load hotspots
βœ… Less product waste
βœ… Stronger, more protected margins

Built to help food manufacturers go further... with confidence in every freeze.

Cold Chain Insight - Britain's cold stores are getting old.

Here's an uncomfortable number for the cold chain sector: more than half of the UK's fixed, warehouse-scale cold stores are over 20 years old, and were never engineered for the 40Β°C+ summers we now experience.

❄️ Ageing assets behave differently.
❄️ Insulation degrades.
❄️ Temperature recovery slows.
❄️ Refrigeration systems work harder for a poorer result.

What's worse, the risk does not announce itself. It surfaces during a heatwave, a peak, or an audit.

Refurbishment is the right answer. But refurbishment means downtime, and downtime means capacity you no longer have.

This is where modern portable cold storage earns its place.

🧊 Blue Cube's advanced-feature cold stores provide upgraded wall insulation, delivering lower energy costs, more consistent internal temperatures and reduced product spoilage - all while your permanent estate is brought up to standard.

πŸ‘‰ The question worth asking your team this quarter: if your oldest cold store came offline for six weeks, where would the product go?

Planning that answer now is considerably cheaper than answering it under pressure.

Freeze faster. Increase output.

If you’re a food processor or manufacturer needing more production capacity, but your site footprint and current infrastructure are holding you back - meet VORTEX.

Sound familiar?
πŸ“¦ Space is tight, but output still needs to grow.
⏱ Current freeze cycles are limiting throughput.
πŸ’Έ Fixed infrastructure expansion is too costly and disruptive.
πŸ“ˆ Rising demand is exposing blast freezing bottlenecks.

Meet VORTEX - Our new-generation portable blast freezer.
The new benchmark for portable blast freezing.

βœ… Freeze to-18ΒΊC at least 20% faster than traditional blast freezer designs.
βœ… Shorter freeze cycles mean more cycles per week, helping increase output and revenue from your existing footprint.
βœ… Increase capacity without the cost, disruption, or risk of site expansion or additional fixed infrastructure.
βœ… Deliver 10%+ energy savings, backed by UK design and 24/7 expert support.

VORTEX is built for food processors and manufacturers that need to increase throughput, protect margins, and get more from the space they already have.

Cold Chain Insight - The infrastructure nobody talks about. ❄️

Ask what keeps British food on shelves and most people say farms, factories, lorries. Almost nobody says cold storage.

The UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) estimates that over 70% of our food passes through the cold chain between farm and fork.

Adding to that, the Cold Chain Federation's 2026 Cold Chain Report, produced with Oxford Economics, puts the sector's contribution to the UK economy at Β£14bn a year, alongside 184,000 jobs and Β£3.7bn in tax revenue. The same research found that around 49% of everything UK food and beverage manufacturers produce and sell (roughly Β£50bn worth) is chilled or frozen.

Half the output of Britain's largest manufacturing sector depends on temperature holding.

When cold storage capacity tightens, the effect is immediate: product at risk, production slowed, compliance exposed. Yet temporary and additional cold storage is still too often treated as a purchasing afterthought rather than what it actually is - contingency planning and capacity strategy.

It belongs in the same conversation as site resilience.

Blue Cube is the specialist rental partner behind portable cold stores for operators who can't afford compromise. Because the cold chain isn't a convenience. It's infrastructure.

πŸ€” Where does cold storage sit in your resilience planning - strategy, or stopgap?

Freeze faster. Protect product quality. Increase output.

Freeze speed is everything in food production.

A slow or uneven freeze leads to:
❄️ Ice crystal build-up
🦠 Bacteria growth
πŸ”¬ Nutrient deterioration
πŸ’§ Drip loss (liquid seeping from products)

All signs of an inefficient freeze. And all avoidable.

We built VORTEX, our new-generation portable blast freezer.
The new benchmark for portable blast freezing!

βœ… Freezes to -18ΒΊC at least 20% faster than traditional portable blast freezer designs
βœ… 10%+ energy savings, reducing operating costs where it matters most
βœ… Designed and built in the UK, backed by 24/7 expert support

For high-volume food processors and manufacturers that demand performance, reliability, and efficiency - this is it.
