Today is World UFO Day! 🛸
Despite most people associating UFOs (more formally referred to as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena by the U.S. Department of Defense) with aliens, unidentified objects give us insight into the unknown of our universe, pilot safety, and the potential discovery of new physics or extraterrestrial intelligence. 👽
UFOs have been redefined as UAPs to reduce historical stigma. It allows researchers to strip away science-fiction myths and examine the data directly using the scientific method. As such, there are many reasons why UAPs are important in the scientific field, such as:
🪐Flight and National Security - Unidentified sightings pose potential physical hazards to commercial pilots and military personnel. Investigating these occurrences helps aerospace and defense sectors ensure airspace safety.
🪐New Physics and Technology - Scientifically validating an anomalous object could reveal entirely new atmospheric phenomena, advanced propulsion systems, or new principles of physics.
🪐Objective Data and AI Development - Organizations like Harvard's Galileo Project use these investigations to build better, AI-driven telescope networks designed to filter out birds and balloons to track fast-moving objects.
🪐Extraterrestrial Life - While most sightings have prosaic explanations (like weather balloons or satellites), analyzing the truly unexplainable data is a cornerstone of astrobiology and the scientific search for alien life.
🪐Psychological & Sociological Research - Academic institutions like Durham University study the phenomena to better understand human perception, mass psychology, and how society processes the idea of extraterrestrial life.
