Traditional motor engineering is trapped in a catch-22: complex projects are high-risk because prototyping is expensive and time-consuming. Yet without prototyping, scoping new designs requires weeks of senior engineering effort just to understand what's possible.

Modern electromagnetic simulation has changed that equation. But here's what most people miss: simulation software alone isn't the differentiator. The real advantage goes to teams with data variety.

In a new SAE Media GroupAutomotive Engineering article, Alex Morley, Team Leader Analysis at Helix, explains why an organisation with dozens of diverse motor designs; even niche, low-volume application will outcompete one with only a few mass-production runs. More variety = richer datasets = faster, more accurate simulations = ability to enter new markets first.
