Starting the week dealing with a Sunday phone call........2 pump systems but still a lack of water on this farm.

One system, with a surface pump hasn't been used for some time, and could only be condemned as unserviceable. 🫣 I forgot my bag of miracles!!

The submersible pump in a second well is now working again, after being treated to a new contactor, and the overload replaced with a suitable motor thermal protector.

All sorted......one visit. Yes - some may have gone to the wholesaler and got a new DOL starter box to make a proper meal from a snack. I didn't.......other jobs to get to! 😎

And I don't really like copper on show either, but I will take that with a 10mm conductors directly into the contactor, over another intermediate connection. 😁

An annual service on this wastewater treatment unit, serving a small group of houses.

One solution is to use a single 200 litre / min air blower. Another solution is 3 x 60 litre / minute air blowers.

The advantage of multiple units is that it is highly unlikely all will fail, and a level of treatment will always be maintained, if a unit fails. The down side is that because something is making a noise, the failure of an individual air blower is unlikely to be noticed.

All 3 were happily working away on this occasion.

The complexity of something simple!! 😏

Around a month ago I fitted a new air blower, to bring this unit back to life.

The customer now reports that the treatment plant has since blown 2 x 3 Amp fuses, and they think it may also be responsible for tripping the main RCD.

There was some accumulated moisture within tub containing the air blower and solenoids.......but not too surprising given where it lives. Cable entries on the upper side of the solenoids is a poor design, when moisture can run down the cable, into the electrical connection.

Checks and tests to individual components failed to reveal any significant issue, other than one solenoid valve had slightly lower electrical separation, and was treated to some WD-40. The unit ran without issue for approximately 2 hrs, while on site.

Intermittent faults are always the best fun. My gut feeling is that it occurs when one of the solenoids activates. Taking it out of the equation will be the next move, if things persist.

This is a Sequence Batch Reactor........ wastewater treatment really doesn't need to be this way......add complexity, reduce reliability.

When you aren't receiving as much water as you have historically, and the pumps are running more hours, thinking there is a leak would seem a reasonable assumption. However, there are other, simpler explanations which need looking at, and eliminating first.

A working / accurate gauge is always useful to confirm pump working pressures.

The suction strainer / non-return valve needed inspection. This was badly worn, and not seating correctly, which could be restricting flow, so was replaced.

And life being life, the working meter on which I replaced the brass tails a couple of months ago, for being split and leaking, was now only clocking intermittently 😏, so needed replacing for accurately quantifying pumped volume, and to satisfy EA requirements. The meters at each end are now reading similarly, suggesting no losses between them.

Both pumps are performing similarly, at 1360 litre / hr and 1320 litres / hr, with 8825 hrs and 15506 hrs running respectively. They should really be closer to 2000 litres / hr at their working pressure, according to the performance curve, so age may be a factor.

The prolonged dry weather has highlighted the deficiency, which will need more work, but a longer term plan may be required. The pipe line is only a single 25mm bore pipe, and approximately 3/4 of a mile long, so there are limits on the volume that can be moved.

Must stay reasonably slender and reasonably agile to get in these chambers, work, and get out again. 😁

She said 'There's something in the wood shed'.......and sure enough, there was!

Servicing a WPL Diamond wastewater treatment unit, which shares its home with some woolly friends.

The customer sent us this photo she took of Antonio.....our happy and helpful service engineer. As an equal opportunities employer, you can see we don't care about any retardation you may have, or which team you have chosen to play for that day! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜

With the money saved using our services, the customer may be able to put it towards a better camera, for snapping rogue contractors on their property! πŸ€—

A failed treatment plant needing some assistance......

With the original air blower having given over a decade of service, and a diaphragm now ruptured, playing with service kits, and adding more labour, cannot really be justified, against a new unit.

The air blower housing sits in a slightly low spot in the garden and it appears may be slightly vulnerable during periods of heavy rain, with the modification by others previously. Some WD-40 and some terminal reshuffling meant the isolator could be made still serviceable.

Being one myself, I have no issues with a 'have-a-go-hero'.......(providing you don't make things significantly worse in the process). When your wife phones for help, having no water, you are now playing with fire more than a water pump. Admitting defeat is never easy!

The main issue was a naughty run capacitor, but I cannot just stop there, and walk away, based on what I found.........a reputation rides on being the last person near it...........and reputation and word of mouth, got me this opportunity.

βœ… Replace failed run capacitor.
βœ… Remove and clean pressure switch.
βœ… Check pressure vessel pre-charge (too low), and top up as necessary.
βœ… Replace power cable between motor and pressure switch (too short).
βœ… Rewire pressure switch so cover fits and sort cable entries.
βœ… Check pressure switch and float switch for correct operation, through several on / off cycles.
βœ… Run neutraliser through backwash and rinse cycles as dirty water was also being reported.
βœ… Leave feeling reasonably confident new customer now has a more reliable pump system.

All sorted. One visit.

They even had their own selection of spare pumps.
