Developed off the back of the om606 defender build. One of our best selling products are these alternator brackets. Our brackets allow you to fit a land rover 300tdi alternator where the Aircon pump used to be, allowing clearance on the right hand side of the engine for steering box’s and big turbos!

More progress on the 605. With the valves out of the head, you can see one of the many things that makes these engines so easily tunable. In the second photo, you can see that the intake ports are a near direct run into the combustion chamber, providing limited obstruction to airflow. This allows these engines to move large volumes of air at high rpm with little to no port modifications.

On highly tuned om606 and om605 engines, the bolt holding the harmonic balancer onto the crankshaft has a habit of working itself loose. Unfortunately, the design of the standard crankshaft is such that a solid woodruff key cannot be installed. Instead, Mercedes uses a piece of folded plate which is purely designed to locate the oil pump gear and main pulley on installation, it is not capable of carrying the load once the balancer bolt comes loose. When the bolt comes loose, the main balancer pulley vibrates and eventually spins on the crank shaft. It is also possible that the oil pump gear will begin to spin, leading to a destroyed crankshaft and the possibility of engine damage due to a loss of oil pressure. In an attempt to bulletproof this om605, we have machined a full keyway into the crankshaft. This would ensure that if something was to come loose, the oil pump gear and crank pulley would keep moving, and the crankshaft wouldn’t be damaged.

Plumbing has been the main focus for the past few weeks. The mx5 now has a modified fuel rail to allow an external pressure regulator to be used, fittings in the sump for the turbo drain and oil temperature sensor, a fitting in the thermostat housing for the turbo water feed line and some snazzy looking charge pipes.

This weeks main focus has been on keepin’ it cool. The radiator and intercooler are now mounted in the car. Unfortunately, due to the length of the engine, the radiator had to be moved forward to ensure the belt pulleys have sufficient clearance. In addition to moving the radiator forward, as the car will now be turbocharged instead of supercharged, there is no need for the dual belt crank pulley. Therefore, in order to lose some weight and gain some clearance, the front half of the crank pulley has been machined off as well. The last picture shows the completed right-hand engine mount.

There’s been more progress on the mx5 this week. The main focus was on the fabrication of the engine mounts. Here you see the LH engine mount which is now complete. The first set you see here was made by hand using cardboard templates and elbow grease. However, I have now reverse engineered this prototype into CAD software to allow them to laser cut in the future. This will ensure they can be manufactured efficiently and consistently for inclusion in an upcoming engine swap kit.

This weeks update on the mx5. A package from arrived so I had a go a mocking up their cast manifold and turbocharger. I have also been busy modifying the sump to allow clearance for the steering rack so the engine is now sitting much lower in the car. In addition to all of this, we now have a hard deadline of the 1st of June to have the car running, tested and roadworthy as it’s taking part in Swiss alps!

The engine is now bolted up to the mx5 gearbox and resting nicely in the engine bay. The engine is currently sitting a little bit too high as the sump clashes with the steering rack and it looks as though the front anti roll bar will have to move. These are relatively small hurdles that shouldn't be too challenging to overcome.

The brake-less Bedford will soon be renamed. After unsuccessfully attempting to bleed the brakes, I discovered the master cylinder was faulty. When disassembling the master cylinder it became apparent that water had got into the bore and made the cylinder walls rusty. The rusty bore destroyed the seals and trapped the piston at the bottom of its stroke. The whole unit has now been sent out to get fitted with new seals and a stainless steel liner to ensure this issue can’t arise again.

It appears as though the om605 boat engine was left outside at some point in its life. Thankfully, the cylinders appear to be rust free, unfortunately the prechambers and injector sleeves are proving to be rather stubborn!
